  • Storms draining lots of fresh water in Bay

It looks like the tropical storm floods are going to adversely affect fishing in the Bay again- with millions of gallons of water falling in our area and millions more falling in the feeder streams, the salinity will be a lot lower again like it was in the early spring- looks like the northern snakeheads will have another opportunity to swim down closer to the mouth of the Bay and inhabit steams closer to the Tidewater area. It is only a matter of time before they will inhabit all of the streams of the Chesapeake Bay-

I wonder if the Bay fishing will recover before the first cold weather?

They are talking about near Agnes flooding levels for the susky basin now. They are predicting 30+ feet at the dam on Friday. 18 to 30 gates are scheduled to open on the dam later this week. The upper bay is gonna become a soup of mud soon. Hopefully the water will stay clear long enough for the tournament this weekend.

I send my prayers to upstate. There going to get hit with another round of massive flooding again weeks after the hurricane.

This is amazing weather, scary as hell, too- It took me hours to get out of DC yesterday due to flooded streets and underpasses- The Charles county roads are awful, too- Lots of standing water, hydroplaning is the main danger driving- the other issue is losing my satellite TV signals- freeze frames, search for signal messages- we have had 9.6 inches of rain in the last twelve hours in Charles County-

Took me 2 hours to go 17 miles to work this morning ...........

as far as the Susky soup .......... don't think there is a chance in hell of it not being soup on Saturday ........... hopefully the trees and trash washed out of the area with the hurrucane a week ago otherwise you will be dodging a forrest of trees coming down and other stuff that won't be mentioned ......... remember, Harrisburgh and even Hershey PA which is about 10 miles from the Susky is under water ...........

Good thing is that it isn't suppose to rain on Saturday ......... but I think there is a chance of Thundersorms in the after noon

All that water in the Chesapeake Bay is like flushing a toliet.

Remember, it was Agnes that everyone blamed for killing off the aquatic plant life in the bay. At least, the media reports of the time reported that sort of thing. They blamed it on the cloudiness of the water following the storm and all of the toxic run off. Take that for how you like, but it probably didn't help out matters. It was more likely a combination of factors. Without the weed lines, as before Agnes, further runoff and nutrients spurred further algae growth, which seems to be the death of the bay, among other things such as overfishing, such species as menhaden. The list goes on and on.

I know that I went in the Navy in 1972, and there was plenty of seaweed when I left home. When I go out three years later, there was no seaweed. Something dramatic took place in the bay watershed.

Now we don't have the yellow perch or the pickeral that we once had or the habitat for other native species to grow. Hey, but look at the bright side, we have snakeheads. Now if we could only have some of those Japanese diesease resistant oysters in the bay and some zebra mussels in the fresh water tributary rivers, as filter feeders, the bay may have a chance. Who said non-native species are bad. Its a whole new world, the bay population has exploded. Adapt or die.

Just some thoughts, just some thoughts.

I suspect the bypass from sewage plants up and down the Bay will have a few "Brown Trout" floating down the Bay, but the billions of gallons of fresh water should flush the big bay commode pretty quickly- give it a week or two and things should be recovering pretty quickly- probably not quick enough to help the tournament, but...

Gotta look on the bright side-

Wow .......... flooding predicted to be within an inch of the record set by Agnes ......... I actually think it will be a new record set ........ this rain is longer than Agnes and I think river was still a little high from the hurricane as well as the ground being saturated ..........

We flooded down in Charles County- US 301 has several big sinkholes that dropped the roadway into a huge hole shutting down the highway

Recall there is an overflow sewage pipe from KI just above the eastern end of the bay bridge. Anyone know if there's a way to find out if there are currently any "emergency" release of untreated effluents?

The question is not if but how many and how much ............

You figure that in heavy thunderstorms municipalities bordering the Bay and it major tributaries routinely dump untreated sewage into the Bay- multiple by ten anything we have seen so far this year- and hurricane season is peaking right now- we could get another one of these late next week - Hell of a time to buy a new Yak and not get to play with it-
