Unicorn lake ice?

Good work on the fly. I also journeyed to Unicorn yesterday. I went early in the morning, which was very much unnecessary. There was still ice on the water--though more open water than I was expecting--and the fish didn't start biting with any regularity until the late morning. I got off the water and entertained myself with some trout fishing on the fly until it warmed up a bit. Good day overall though. The pickerel seemed to like my wakebait.

Yes. This time of year it's wise to sleep in before hitting the ponds. Afternoons are usually better for fishing, especially if the sun comes out strong.

Thanks Tom. It must have avoided the hazards of pickerel life thus far. Theirs is a tough world. So often I catch them with beak marks on their sides where a heron lost its meal or other evidence of the wars that take place under the surface. Look at the lower tailfin on this one from yesterday:

I have caught fish over 20" at Loch Raven with bite marks that appear to be from Northern Pike
