  • Upgrading FF from a Lowrance Elite4 HDI

I am looking to upgrade my fish finder from a Lowrance Elite4 HDI, and will be mounting it on my 2018 Revo. I'd like to stay in the Lowrance family, possibly a Hook5. I use a Navionics card in my current unit, and will do the same with a new one. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

I wouldn't consider the Hook5 an upgrade by most metrics. It's the exact same unit you have now with a slightly larger screen. I've read articles that the Hook series has experienced a lot more quality issues than the previous Elite series. I have the same ff you currently have and for a kayak I don't think it can be beat. The screen is plenty big to have the chart on top and sonar on bottom simultaneously. A bigger screen in this comparison is only going to drain your battery faster.

What features are you looking for that you currently don't have?

As new tech is released yearly, the older tech becomes significantly more affordable.

I have an Elite 7ti touchscreen totalscan, I think I bought it on blackfriday 2017 for $1100, and I see them nowadays for $450ish. I'd look into the slightly older ELITE series, or the Hook2 series which carries alot of the updated functions but without the touch screen. Some yakkers (like me) love the touch, and some hate it.

Thanks for these posts. Basically looking for similar options as the Elite4, but with a bit larger screen.

Upgrading FF from a Lowrance Elite4 HDI

I upgraded to a seven inch screen for the sidescan features...I have the Hummingbird 798 ci Hd SI and love the side scan features but wanted to be able to see more detail than you can see on the five inch screen...after looking at a bunch of units, I opted for the Hook2-7 Totalscan chartplotter/Fishfinder combo...after several fishing trips on the unit, I am learning the menus and features and getting more comfortable with the unit...I wanted to stay with Hummmingbird, but could not compete feature for feature with Lowrance. They just offer a bigger bang for the buck. I looked at Garmin but the true Downscan feature of Lowrance vs. stitched software of Garmin turned me back to Lowrance...looking at the Ti vs. Hook 2 was more difficult, but the touchscreen was not attractive to me in my fishing experiences with water spots getting on the screen and bright sunlight...I decided to get my unit up higher by installing the 9 inch HRail on my right side and using the Ram1.5 inch HRail ball mount. Same issue with the screen getting water splashes convinced me to get the Berley Pro sun shield to help with water and sun...only down side is the sun shield has to be removed to install Navionics map chips in the chip slot on the Hook2-7 TS...but once installed I put the shield back on...I just don’t plan to ever remove the chip...it is a PIA..

Bought an Elite 7 ti with navionics chip for $500 from bass pro this winter. Have only used it twice but so far so good.
