  • What if...

Much of this forum is devoted to striper fishing. But what if 2019 is another year of sparse stripers. Are you going to adjust your kayak fishing targets and techniques?

Here in the mid-Bay region our tidal options after stripers are limited. Specks usually stay to our south. Redfish are even more rare. Bluefish may show up in the summer but they didn’t impress us last year with their numbers. Channel cats unexpectedly filled a void in 2018 but frankly I prefer the headshake of a good striper over the “tractor pull” of a channel cat. White perch occupied their usual niche in 2018 and I suspect they’ll do so again. However even they were a few weeks delayed last year from reaching their summer shallow water haunts.

Snakeheads are expanding their range. No longer do we have to fish the heavy salad at Mattawoman to find them. They’re now in less obstructed waters that we can fish without the exhaustion of dragging weedless lures through a tangle of vegetation cast after cast. But I do wish they had a different name. I’m not fond of snakes of any kind and attaching that name to a fish destroyed its allure for me.

The Eastern Shore ponds often are covered with algae when tidal striper fishing should be hot. I’ve tried to get my fill of the ponds this winter and will continue to do so this spring before they slime over. I’ll return to them when the algae clears in the fall. But what to do this summer if stripers are rare?

Upper Potomac smallmouth won’t disappoint if our rains are normal. However, rather than antique my kayaks with bruises from rock collisions, I prefer to wade the river.

There’s fragrant meat on the hook and anchoring in deep water to entice blue cats in the lower Potomac. Nope. Just can’t do it. I’m an intractable shallow water lure/fly angler unwilling to resort to cut bait. I respect those who have that skill and tenacity. I do not have the patience to anchor and bottom fish. Like Eddie Rabbitt, “I gotta keep moving”.

Motor boats are always an option to run and gun to find stripers. Charter captains will definitely find them this year and provide a lengthy and expensive boat ride in the process. Perhaps some on this forum will expand the range of their kayaks with battery driven propellers. But even a Jon Boat with a 9.9 HP motor will beat you to fish. I’ll take my chances by poking along with pedals and paddles.

Lastly, there are always trips to other states. Kayak fishing guides are prevalent now. But what a shame to leave our home waters because a favorite target may be in decline.

So, what are you going to do if stripers disappoint us this year? Change tactics? Change species? Change locations?

I see a lot of white perch in my future if the stripers are not plentiful in 2019.

Just curious how others approach what may be a changing fishery.

What did people do during the moratorium on stripers in the 80's? I was too young and too busy chasing brook trout in mountain streams at the time.

Upper Potomac smallmouth bass. Small river and creek fly fishing. Reservoir fishing. Sure hope the rains return to a more normal situation. I miss kayak fishing the Potomac for smallmouth. Hope to have my first trip in May if the river cooperates.

I’ll still fish for stripers, but I also plan to try crabbing this summer. I may end up devoting more time to that. I also don’t mind fishing for white perch and blue cats every so often. I wouldn’t be upset if bluefish showed up either.

I'd like to get out on the Rivers/Bay more, i'm a tride-n-true skinny water guy. While deep water is a bit scary to me, i'd like to conquer that this year.

SH seems to be heating up VERY early this year. Not sure if that means they'll be fished out by the time I get across the bridge in July... We shall see...

            Mark,

That is a very good question and one I have thought of several times this year. I've tried to come up with several strategies for fishing this year if the stripers don't show up in numbers. I plan on expanding my fishing areas to include NJ, PA and VA but again the weather will dictate some of those areas. I was prepared to fish several times last year near Pittsburgh but the river levels were just to high. I still plan on making a trip or two to Florida and perhaps Corpus Christi in the fall. I don't mind catching Blue Cats and will target them as well as perch, I would really like to get back into catching LMB and SMB but as you are thinking I'm really concerned about the lack of stripers last year and can't see how it would be better thus year.

There was an abundance of blues back then and they were fun. Acres of breaking blues during the summer and monster blues in the shallows in the spring

                Keith,

Corpus Christie is a place I'd definitely like to revisit. Great kayak fishing waters with Reds and specks galore.

I've never been after stripers in my kayak, so I don't even know what I'm missing. My old yak was a 9'6" sit in pelican that I barely trusted in little ponds, but now my Moken is seaworthy! My big goals for this summer are 1) Catch my first snakehead, eat it, then catch a bunch more, whether that's in Blackwater, Middle River, Bush River, Northeast, wherever., and 2) Launch at the pier in Henelopen, DE, and target some of the saltwater species I was raised on. Within paddling distance you can get flounder, spot, stripers, blues, sea trout, black drum, sea bass, and tog. Hoping to meet up with some others who are a little more familiar and know what they're doing kayak wise there, since I was born and raised a motorboat baby, and I'm more used to offshore stuff.I'll search for the stripers when I can, but those are the two big targets.

Your absolutely right about acres of blues. I didn’t even care about stripers then!![emoji23]

Already changed my Outlook, this was a great Post Mark!!! I am the "Blue-Cat" King right now, Then onto White Perch King, trying out Snakeheads this year. Back to S.C. to Chase Reds, and move around more this year.

I was truly ready for more variety.

It will be disappointing if the fishery continues to decline. I feel bad for you upper and mid bay guys that may have to travel farther or change tactics completely if the fishery bottoms out in the bay. Living in the Ocean City area, and a short run to the ESVA, I feel fortunate to have many options to fill the void.

I already spend a tenth of the time I used to dedicate to fishing the fall run of migrating stripers off the beaches of Assateague and Ocean City because that fishery is dead. And has been for several years now. So I guess I can say it already has effected how I fish. I now tog fish when I otherwise would have been on the beach chasing migrating stripers. Or I now have to settle for fishing the smaller, resident schoolies in the bay behind OC instead of their bigger, migratory brothers in the ocean. Heck, I've even discovered I can find some jumbo white perch during that time of year locally. As much as I miss the fall striper run and look forward to the day it returns, I still get plenty of enjoyment out of these other fisheries I once overlooked.

In the end, there is always something to fish for and somewhere to try. I'd take it as an opportunity to discover, or re-discover, new areas and enjoy what the other fisheries have to offer. Maybe pullout some mulberry patterns and chase some carp on the fly? I bet some big gar on the fly would be fun too.

This is exactly what my plans are....

I started out on the Chesapeake back in 2010 just to get out on the salt water after I left the Ocean City area... and it developed into fishing.. where I am now.

I am back into the journey... and the journey, for me is the reward.
I am planning on camping trips on the kayak... pushing the limits.

                            All,

                            Excellent thoughtful replies.

I'm glad our plastic armada remains undaunted and will find alternative ways to enjoy their kayaks if the stripers do not cooperate.

Keep those reports coming throughout the year.

                            Thank you,

I live by the striper so I'll die by it too :-)
Very few species allow the range of techniques to readily catch them as our beautiful gamefish.
