  • Will someone do an Anti Rain Dance please

When will the rain stop........ The weekend forecast looks like rain, rain and more rain...

I have not been out on the water for 3 weeks and i'm going crazy.

I'm thinking about hitting the Rhode river for some perch action in the rain if the thunder god is sleeping. Any recon on that area lately? How is the water conditions in that area now? Is it worth dropping some crab traps this time of year that far north?

I went crabbing there on the Rhodes and the water is stained but not bad at all. I managed 1/2 bushel. I saw fish jumping everywhere and there were some people on the peir catching some small perch. This was about 10 days ago.

Very nice thanks for the info. What depth did you find the crabs in? I'm a novice when it comes to crabbing. Do they tend to move to deeper water in the fall? What triggers them to move?

        Thanks again.

I love crabbing from my canoe, now I enjoy even more being able to crab from my Kayak. I recently made a video of my maiden voyage. I caught the crabs in 3 to 6 feet of water 10 days ago. Water temperature is what makes the crabs move to deeper water and eventually out of the rivers. As the water temperatures becomes cooler then you must go deeper for the crabs (8-12 feet). Typically, I do not crab past the end of October. I have crabbed with traps and trotlines and handlines, but enjoy the trotline the best and I get a greater yield of crabs.

I have not fished in the Rhodes in years, does it yield perch with any size to them?

I love that video. You have a killer crabbing setup and your technique in deploying and netting is very impressive. I would love to try that but i have a hard enough time jigging the bridge in my kayak let alone trying to run a trot line. I plan on using 4 ring traps in the background while fishing. I will be happy with 6 keepers and a few nice perch for a meal. I get picked out after 6 crabs anyway.

I have caught some nice perch along the docks on the Rhode the last several years. They tend to be spaced out so you end up weeding thru allot of 6" to 8" fish but there are some 11" to 12" mixed in. In the past the larger fish tended to hang out further under the docks at the end. I try to stay 15ft to 20ft away from the docks and skip lures under them. Some times I get it under there a good distance and sometimes I smack the dock.

I have also noticed larger fish at the base of detached pylons on the sides of the docks.

My plan is to paddle to a section of docks and deploy the traps in open water. Then i can fish the group of docks really well and check the traps after a 20 to 30min soak. After this i will pack everything up and move to the next set of docks and repeat. This way i can cover allot of docks and not have to worry about paddling all the way back to my traps to check them.

                Man i'm jealous now.

Where are you staying? The sails and kings should be eating close to shore around this time.

                  Rain, rain, go away

Tufnik and I fished the rain last Saturday at Point Lookout- It was cold, windy and rough, but the fish didn't mind- Small to medium Blues were every where and mixed in were some Stripers and an occasional Speckled Trout- I am debating putting on my dry top and doing it again this weekend- I will be traveling next weekend so I won't be able to fish-

But I have about a full day of rigging to do on the Ugly Duckling to finish up- I have got to install my Eagle Cuda 350 SMap, make a wet well Duct seal system for the transducer and install the Ram mount of the Fish finder. I also need to install my anchor trolley and the Ram Revolution rod Holder that came in from my order from Hook1 today- so I may just chuck it this week and get to work on the Duck- I would like to put a few Speckled Trout in the freezer before they are gone for the season-

Just told my wife; "I'm tired of waiting for the rain to stop". I'm going fishing Saturday unless there's thunder. I always tell my kids, as I've always said, the fish are already wet!! Was thinking about hitting Piney Run on Saturday morning just to try my luck.
