I was there last week and got a $250 carbon fiber paddle for $85. I grabbed a pair of boat shoes while I was at it as well.

Of the Standard Horizon HX 40 and West Marine VHF 160 Portable (both $99.99), which is the better radio?

I would say the VHF 160. The HX 40 is a real basic radio.

I have never used a Standard Horizon radio, but many on Snaggedline seem to like them. Several years ago I purchased the West Marine 160 radio and have been very pleased with it. I use it on my kayak and also as the only radio on my center console boat. One feature that is a clear improvement over my previous ICOM radio is that I can lock the settings with the push of a button. It was not uncommon on my old radio to set it on Channel 68 and bump the radio buttons while fishing. At the end of the I would discover that my buddies were trying to call me, but the radio had moved over to channel 67 or 69 and never received their calls.

I’d make sure to get one that floats or has a flotation adapter kit. Never now when you’ll have a case of the fumbles or tumbles and you want that radio to be bobbing on the surface.

For sure, I’m the poster child for being a butterfinger! If you see me on the water, you’ll see leashes on paddle, pedal drive, rods, and all tools.

If it can be dropped and lost, I’d find a way to do it! [emoji2957]

Yes, floating vh is a must. Some people leash everything, but I just clip mine onto my PFD. There have been times where it has fallen off / become unclipped, but luckily it's landed within the yak deck.
