I used to carry a huge rotomolded cooler. Works great, ice-cold, but heavy as a tank.

I've recently switched to a soft sided cooler, which I line with a trash bag if I plan on keeping my catch.

Yep, spot on and I agree that it is a bad cooler. I make it work with ice packs during the day and if I keep anything, I purchase ice afterwards.

Great to hear everyones response. I use a cheap, small igloo cooler as of right now but wasnt sure if it was worth the cost to drop on a yetti or ozark cooler. To me I dont think it would be worth the weight to lug it around. Havent really considered getting one for fish. I assume most of the time you could keep it on a stringer for a bit then put in in a larger cooler kept in the car. Never kept anything so its new to me.

I carry a small soft cooler I bought from amazon. I will hold 2 ice packs and 2 water bottles and still have plenty of space for food too. I also take a jug with ice and water, ice last all day so I just refill from my bottles in the cooler. the cooler fits right behind my seat in front of my tackle crate. I always like to take plenty of drinking water, especially on these hot days. Keep the rods bent and stay hydrated..!

Protip: I also freeze a 2/3 full 3Liter Deer Park Bottle (or two, depending on the trip duration) and leave it out in the sun on the yak deck to thaw back into potable water.

Saves precious room in the cooler, or able to bring a smaller cooler size. Also freeze gatorade / powerade, but when they thaw, you get super-concentrated drink the first half, and then watered down red liquid the second half.

I carry a soft cooler with me, it's a $10 wegmans cooler bag. I got the biggest size they have and I'm able to fit a good bit of fish in it, with ice as well. I usually carry 2 PBJ sandwiches and 2 granola bars for a typical 6 hour outing, and separate those in the cooler in tupperware or whatever. I use a frozen half gallon tea container filled with water as an ice pack, along with another large ice pack, and that works pretty well unless it's over 85 for most of my outing. In that case I'll buy a small 7lb bag of ice before my trip and that ends up being about 1/2 melted over 8 hours or so. I want to get the DPS fish bag eventually, but I think I would only use it on ocean outings, which I think I'll do maybe 5-6x per year.

I'm with you, i'd love a DPS or Cabelas bag, but I can't justify the ~$120+ cost for only using sparingly.

Yep, the $10 bag works just fine for what I need. I may actually buy a second one, but a smaller one, and just use it to transport extra ice for longer days. I'll just store it in the front hatch.

Costco cooler bags...same as Wegmans...slightly insulated but very tough canvas fish bag...had mine for years...just don’t throw catfish in them...spines rip the insides out...
