  • Casting crankbaits for stripers

I rarely use crankbaits, mainly because of my dislike of multiple hooks, and particularly multiple treble hooks. I have swapped out trebles for inline J hooks on the few crankbaits and other hard body plastic lures I have. But recently I have seen crankbaits perform well (sometimes better than soft plastics -- my favorite type of lure). Walleye Pete has his clients throw a lot of crankbaits during his charters. He typically uses X-Rap 10 and 12 lures. When I fished with him a few weeks ago, the crankbaits outfished most other types of lures.

Earlier this week I fished on a friend's boat out of the South River. We caught loads of stripers at Thomas Point light, the Bay Bridge rock piles, over several shallow bars, and in breaking fish in open water -- all on artificial lures. It was one of my better fishing days in a while. I threw jigheads with paddletails for much of the time, but after watching my friend catch more fish and larger fish using an X-Rap 10, I threw several types of hard plastic lures in my tackle box. My two crankbaits were an X-Rap 8 and a Yozuri plug of similar size. Both had a small lip, causing the lure to run pretty shallow. I got nowhere near the bites he had with his larger and deeper-running lure. I also caught fish on a Rat-L-Trap, a topwater popper, and a topwater prop bait. With the number of fish we saw, it was a great time to test out different lures.

After reviewing what I observed during that trip, I think I will buy some larger crankbaits. The ones that my friend used (X-Rap 10 and later a Yozuri Crystal Minnow of a similar size) got quite a bit of attention. After that long introduction, I am curious to learn what types of crankbaits other Snaggedline members like to cast for stripers.

    Casting crankbaits for stripers

I use XRaps extensively...probably have 20 or more and swapped out the trebles for in line single replacement hooks on every hard bait I own..I have XRaps in many sizes from the XR-14, XR 12, XR 10 and XR 8’s...they are very effective not only for Stripers but also Speckled Trout and Bluefish...I have a few YoZuri Crystal minnows but rarely use them as much as I use XRaps...in late fall the big XR14 in menhaden color really comes into its own throwing to big schools of bait...most of the time I throw the 10...good in between size that catches just about everything if you know how to work it...I don’t use rattle traps...never had much luck with them.IMG_0695.jpg

Thanks Ron. I know that you troll X-Raps. Do you cast with them too?

Oh yeah, and I use them like Kevin VanDam does as a jerk bait...especially around rip rap and throwing to breaking fish...I would normally troll until I find the fish then cast to them...but since I have the new Hook2-7TS unit I can locate fish much more efficiently and troll less than in years past...this year I have cast a lot more than I troll...and there are only two colors of the XRaps that I buy and have in my inventory...these are the only ones I have found to consistently work...

          I have only two X-Raps.

          crankbaits.jpg

I don’t know their model numbers but the larger one is 4 inches and smaller one is 3 inches. I’ve caught stripers with both of them casting and trolling. And I lost a black 4-inch X-Rap to a CNR in the Severn – an expensive loss.

However, I prefer a ½ oz. Rat-L-Trap (third bait in photo) to the X-Raps mainly because the Rat-L-Trap casts much farther than the X-Raps. Rat-L-Traps fly like bullets through the air. They’re also a lot less expensive than X-Raps. If I stick a CNR there's no need to cry.

Perhaps if I used larger X-Raps I could cast them as far. But I have quite a few ½ oz. Rat-L-Traps in various colors. They work very well for stripers and even ambitious white perch. I have no history of them with specks but I bet they would work.

As you can see, I swapped the trebles with inline hooks.

I've had success using a bunker pattern Daiwa SP Minnow casting at the bay bridge. I also have various rattletraps, xraps, and crystal minnows.

I've had good luck trolling and casting X-Rap XR-10's for stripers. When casting, I fish it like a jerkbait and get a lot of bites on the pause.

I use XR10's & XR12's, but like Mark said above, my PB striper came from a RatLTrap

Thanks for the replies. I picked up a Yozuri Crystal 3D minnow this morning and already swapped out the treble hooks. I plan to test it out over the next three days. I also plan to pick up an X-Rap 10 the next time I am in a store that sells them.

I'll add my vote for the X-Rap 10 too. It's a quality little lure.

When I bump up the size of my hard body swim lures I tend pull out a SP Minnow or Bomber from the tackle box. For deeper water I like the sinking versions of the SP.

Make sure to change out the stock hardware though and ditch the nose split ring. The split rings and hooks on SP's, Bomber's, and X-Rap's are junk. Straight out of the box I've had split rings open and hooks bend out on all of these lures on even modest fish.

You could load your smaller ones. Just a couple cc's of water or oil, or a couple pellets of some #8 shot can really improve casting distance.

Agreed, but the saltwater Yo-zuri's come with quality hooks and rings though.

It is amazing how quality sucks on high dollar baits...cheap hardware...but we see it all the time, not just in fishing, either...a good product made less by economizing on the hardware...Bomber plugs suffer from the same...I routinely remove treble hooks and replace with in line single replacement hooks...split rings and hooks...

The other I have had great success with, especially on the Suskey, are the Rapala broke backs in shad & yellow perch coloration.
