  • Cutlass Fish

I’ve been fishing the bay around St Mary’s in earnest for the last 5 years. Until this year I’d never heard of, or seen, a Cutlass Fish. A couple months ago Kevin Fry said he caught one, then John Veil at the M&G, then yesterday Matt got one on top water around St George’s Island. All were from the Lower Potomac. Today I got one in the Patuxent. I found it both one of the prettiest fish I’ve caught and at the same time scary and eel like revolting. As it flopped in my hand I thought it might cut my legs it’s body is so thin and flattened like a knife. Perhaps not what I was looking for but it made for an entertaining morning. We are blessed down here to get so many odd visitors to our waters

I used to catch them down va beach night fishing hrbt. At times they got so thick in there they'd jump right in the kayak with you. Surprisingly enough, they are actually quite tasty.

I caught one on a Yo-zuri crystal minnow at the Rt. 90 bridge in Ocean City a couple of weeks ago. Fascinating fish.

Best description I’ve read. It was blinding how silver it was.

I think i've caught one off the Myrtle Beach fishing pier. Their shinyness is unmistakable, like liquid chrome.

John Veil told us at the M&G that he saw them in the talons of Osprey and kept wondering what they had?

                Cool Fish!!

We used to use them as live bait under a toy ballon off the beach for king mackerel...most any small shiny fish is King bait...tailor blues, bar jacks, even Speckled Trout...
