  • likely going out tomorrow

if anyone wants to join let me know, no solid plans, but potentially a perch/ blue cat trip, though i'd be happy doing pretty much anything if someone'd like to meet up. not planning on leaving super early, likely a late morning/ early afternoon trip for me.

Well, you didn't miss much. Abbreviated trip today was at mattawoman from 11-3, hardly any activity. Left slavins, headed right, went as far as the point, then turned around and went as far as the (not so sunken) barge. One bite, decent size fish, but it popped off right at the boat after playing tug of what for a few minutes so I'm not counting it. Only other activity was a snag. A very productive snag though because I managed to pull the tree limb up and (no exaggeration) pulled 14 bank sinkers between 1-2 oz off of it. So I guess it was a productive day, I should have taken a pic of the snag, it was comical if a bit sad, about 6 feet long and literally covered with line and sinkers, but I was getting close to being late heading home, and after cutting all the line/sinkers off and throwing them in my boat (for the trash/my extra lead bin) and sending the stick back to the depths... I was then actually late. Still a good day on the water even if the fish were all away for the holidays. Tight lines.

Years ago I walked on the beach at Jonas Green park on a cold winter day. The wind had blown the water out of the river, exposing a huge slice of beach. I saw a large irregular fiberglass piece of debris washed up on the beach. I went over and collected about 20 lbs worth of lead sinkers off of dozens of bottom rigs that had caught on the debris. I loaded the mostly 1-oz and 2-oz sinkers into all my pockets and stayed at it until my hands got too cold. I still have many of those sinkers in a box in my garage.

          Congratulations Justin.

You'll have better fishing days for sure. But that sinker cache was a worthy reward for your efforts and would be as memorable as a good fish to me.

They go a long way when pouring jigs. I'm always happy to find them to recycle -- either uncovered in rocks and sunken branches by low tides or dangling from bridges and piers like ornaments on a Christmas tree. They turn to liquid quickly in my melting pot and become useful tackle again in a jig mold.
