2019 Photos of Scenes on the Water

I started my 2020 fishing year yesterday at Morgan Run wading and casting flies for trout. I caught nothing, which is more a statement of my trout fishing skills than it is for the fishery there. However, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I was outdoors in a perfect setting. I shared some photos of that trip with a friend this morning via email and I remarked that we're very fortunate to pursue our hobby on a beautiful stage. Catching fish is often merely a bonus given the imagery that surrounds us on the water. That thought made me take a look back at my 2019 fishing outing photos. I looked not for those with images of fish in them, but scenes that I found interesting. In other words, more proof that we play on wonderful stage as we fish.

Here are 10 images that caught my eye.

Winter -- John Rentch paddling along a shoreline of a Delaware pond. Even without leaves, trees make a pretty backdrop.

This site limits us to 10 photos per post. It was hard to hold my selections to those above. Perhaps you have photos to share of the interesting areas you visited last year to pursue fish. Not looking for photos of the fish, but the scenery you encountered while pursuing them.

I found myself taking far more pictures of scenery this year as you can only photograph a striper so many ways before you’ve run out of angles. I guess the same can be said for scenery but each sunrise is different to me.

Lovely photos and a reminder that things will get better, Spring isn't that far away!

Morgan Run, just above Klee Mill Rd. is one of the prettiest trout streams in Central Maryland. Lots of boulders and pocket water.
I used to fish that area quite a bit when I was in my "Fly Fishing Purist" mode.

About 30 odd years ago, I caught several trout in shirtsleeve weather on Christmas day. The next Christmas it was 5 below zero and the stream was totally iced over.

I also had one of my classic falls there, fishing in early March.
I was standing on a wet rock wearing rubber hip waders, about 1/4 below the Klee Mill bridge, when the local DNR officer, who was standing on the bank above me, called for me to show him my license. I turned, lost my footing and went butt deep into 38 degree water.
I told him that he could see my license after I ran to my car and got out of the wet clothes. He tried not laugh.

That's where I was. You couldn't be more correct. It's stunning. Here are some photos I took there on Wednesday:

I had quite a workout climbing those rocks, crawling over downed trees and walking on the steep slippery hillside. I managed to stay upright somehow. But I was thinking that it's a lot easier to paddle or pedal to catch fish.

One of my favorites is this one including the reflection and what reminds me of overlapping normal curves in the mountains, shadow, and reflection. This is from the backwaters of an Adirondack pond.
