John Rentch and I plan to launch into Weems Creek from the Tucker St ramp between 9:15 and 9:30 Mon morning. We will fish for several hours, then head to the Canton for lunch. Please let us know if you want to do either fishing or lunch or both. Low tide is at 5:35 am. The air temp should be in the upper 40s by then with low wind.

Thanks guys. I will have to miss this too. Week day outings are hard for me, but take plenty of pictures so I can live through you.MOC a.k.a. "Machburner the Crab Whisperer"

We could not have asked for a nicer February day on the water. Weems was slick calm when we launched and never got more than a rippled surface. The clarity is good too -- I can see down at least 4 ft. I know where the pickerel have been hanging out in several Severn tributaries, but decided to visit some places I have not yet tried this winter.
The first stop produced no bites in 30 mins of casting. I moved to a second tributary and caught two pickerel with one follow from a large fish. John Rentch fished in a third tributary and stayed out longer. He was enjoying the nice day so much that he skipped the planned Chinese buffet lunch. I met Gary, another Old Guy Who Likes to Fish (OGWLF) member at the restaurant. John can report on his day later.
It seems that both the Severn tributaries and the eastern shore ponds are producing better in the afternoon than in the morning recently. Perhaps the extra few degrees of warming helps ring the dinner bell. Yesterday afternoon I fished from 2:00 to 4:00. For the first hour, the bite was slow, but all of a sudden the bite got fast and furious. We have not yet discovered the triggering mechanism that rings the bell. More practice and water time is needed.John Veil

I am not really equipped to do cold weather canoeing, so I decided to spend a some time today trying to catch some trout out of a local stream to take advantage of the fleeting nice weather.
After 45 minutes of stumbling, tripping, and doing everything I could not to hurt myself, I tore the sole out of my wading shoe..........fortunately the wader (and the fisherman) stayed intact and dry.
So I caught this:

Yes this morning was a great one to be on the Severn. The air temp was 54 at 9:30, but the water was still a cold 36. John and I north to a local pond and fished a couple coves.
One thing I noticed was the clarity of the water. I could see my lure three to the bottom. I managed to land a 14” Pickerel on a yellow twister tail. That was it for the fish. I just spent the rest of the morning looking for more Pickerel, but no luck. I did enjoy the warm morning for an early February day.Last edited by J. Rentch; 02-04-2020, 08:01 AM.John Rentch

Stu -- Better to try than to sit idly by. Better days await.
Weems -- I was hoping you guys would nail them today. When the water is crystal clear you can see them attack your lures or flies. But maybe that was the problem. They could see you! Good luck next time.Mark
