  • Kokatat Tempest dry pants

    Anyone using these?

If so what are your thoughts on them instead of waders?

Price is about the same as waders and seems like they would be more comfortable.

I wear NRS dry pants and also have an NRS dry top. I like them. Comfortable enough (hey're not sweatpants by anymeans). can layer underneath of them.

I just recieved a pair today. I tried them on and they are deffinetly more comfortable then waders. I found that waders in my Outback bunch up and to be very uncomfortable. The tempest seem like they will be much more comfortable when peddaling. I got them from www.campmor.com $149.99

        Jim,
I can't quite tell, but does it have a zipper fly opening?

Are the socks attached to the pants water proof?

I've been wearing my gander mountain rain pants to keep me mostly dry except for my feet. I havnt been cold enough to be uncomfortable with wet feet yet, but I will probably be buying some breatheable stocking foot waders this weekend. I have heavy neoprene waders for duck hunting and trout fishing, but they would be to bulky to wear on the kayak.

That's where I saw them too.
How's the fit on those? A lot of reviews said they were cut small and to order larger that normal.

If you don't mind.........what's your measurements and what size did you order?

No zipper but only velcro straps around waist. It will be a pain to totake a leak but doablebut. The boots are water proof. zero insulation from cold but water proof.

Considerably cheaper and a good product:

Same here- although I also have the light weight stocking foot waders, too. I ordered the Fila Skeletoes water shoes so I can wear the NRS Splash Pants and Dry top and peddle in comfort.

Just ordered the tempest pants and jacket from campmor. Im assuming a few others ordered as well ... lol... cause the price went up 5 bucks already.

Unfortunately the large pants are on back order so might be awhile.

Couldnt decide on L or XL for the pants and didnt realise the L's were not in stock till I ordered.

Was really hoping to splash the new outback for the 1st time this weekend but might have to wait now. Im not ready to freeze my arse off on my 1st outing ... lol. Guess I'll have to burn some gas this weekend and run the Sea Ray over to the chester river.

Also ordered a stolquist fishing PFD, anchor kit and the outback drop in liner from ACK tuesday and that order should be here saturday.

You should get in that Outback and start peddling! Once you do, you will be amazed at how much you enjoy the experience and simplicity of kayak fishing. It is not nearly as complicated as powerboat fishing, although the techniques are similar for trolling. You can't load up your family in the kayak like you can in your boat and you can't run for miles and miles chasing fish, but otherwise, it is very satisfying. You learn a new technique for landing fish- especially large fish. The Outback is very dry, and you don't get wet like you do in my Prowler. Splash pants and a dry top will keep you nice and comfy- so will a set of good fitting light weight breathable waders. I went out last week on the Potomac at the route 301 bridge without waders or splash pants- wore swim suit and a drytop and the water was fine- peddling kept my body warm- in fact I took my dry top off after a few minutes, sweating. Until it gets cold, the water won't be uncomfortable for launching and recovery.

I plan on spending some money this winter for the dry pants and dry top. I used waders and a splash top last year and they worked fine but the chest waders were a bit bulky and i was not 100% waterproof if i turtled (no bottom seal on the splash top).

I'm also thinking about getting a mustang self inflatable vest for winter time use to cut down on the bulkiness and possible allow an easier self entry with all the bulky outerwear.

Just got to scrape up some nickles and dimes.

                          Cage,
Dont let not having the dry pants keep you off the water on the kayak this weekend. Its supposed to be pretty nice. I really dont think you need dry pants this weekend.

I'm just worried about if I flip it.
That water is cold already and I need to try some re-entries before I go out to far.

I might play around a bit along the river edges this weekend near my marina to get a feel for it though.

The Outback is a very stable yak. I stand and fish on mine a lot and I dont even have stabilizers. Im not saying that you shouldnt be cautious on your first outing, but I think you'll be surprised at how hard you would have to try to flip the outback.
