  • Treble hook replacement to single hooks.

I have been fishing a lot of whopper ploppers lately and having great success. I get a great hook up ratio but at the same time it is a lot of stress on the fish from the extra hooks, to the extra time to dehook, and the stress I get from messing with a flipping fish with hooks everywhere on a kayak. I was wondering if anyone has decided to switch to single hooks and if it's worth it. I wouldn't mind missing some fish but not looking to get skunked if I switch. Thanks for the help.

I switched out all my hard plastics from trebles to inline hooks. They work just fine.

Switched all my top waters last year to single hooks. I feel like I'm getting better hook-ups now with the whopper popper. Still prefer the Zara however.

i'm working on this switch too. Hopefully OP doesn't mind an additional ask- normally i like supporting local tackle shops if i can, but in the COVID era i'd appreciate any links to online vendors that you all might use for these (and other) purchases

Just left bass pro and only knew found one style hook "single hook" but only had 5/0. Also the eye of the hook very open and didn't look like it was going to work very well.

I bought my inline single hooks down in OBX at Red Drum tackle but I found the same exact hooks online:

            https://www.amazon.com/Inline-Single...1-1&th=1&psc=1

I put a 2/0 in the back facing rearward and a #1 up front facing forward.

I did have to get the split rings online as the pliers make it much easier. My eyesight and dexterity ain't what it used to be. Of course you could just reuse the split rings from the trebles.

I've replaced a number of trebles on my kastmaster spoons with VMC single hooks you can get on amazon. Good strong hooks and they provide a sizing guide on their webpage for trebles. I like being able to put a much larger hook on the lure and not mess with the balance. Also gives me the chance to use a heavier ring than the oem. I was fishing a spoon with the old treble and I was getting way too many 2 and 3 barbs in the perches mouth.

I really dislike using treble hooks. For years I avoided hard lures with trebles. More recently I have been replacing the trebles with inline J hooks.

Until this week, I have been buying VMC inline hooks in small packages from tackle shops. My experience has been that they stock very few sizes. Last week I made an Amazon order and needed a few extra items to reach the free shipping threshold. I purchased this box of assorted inline hooks. They arrived yesterday. The smaller sizes should work well on small crankbaits. The larger ones look visually like the VMC ones I already have.

Been doing it a while, too, John...my biggest complaint is the rusting of the smaller sized hooks..Mustad makes a zinc plated salt water hook that has shown the best rust resistance.

                    bassguy84,

You won't get skunked with inline hooks. Nor will will your replacements imbalance your lures and ruin their actions. Those are the primary worries of those who hesitate to remove trebles.

I've used Owner and VMC. They've both worked equally fine. But finding them locally can be difficult. Online suppliers have better size selections.

There are also plenty of sites online to give you treble to inline hook size conversions. Most suggest changing to an inline hook that has a gap as wide as the entire treble hook you are replacing. That's what I have done and it has worked well.

You'll be glad when you make the switch.

I’ve switched all of mine over to single hooks and haven’t noticed any difference in hookup ratio. I like being able to land and release quickly while doing minimal damage. Better for the fish and allows more time for fishing.

I made the switch with no problems. Rapala has a nice chart for their replacements.
