  • Wind

I was making plans to get out tomorrow morning for a few hours at Brooms Island,,, but they are calling for 10-12 mph winds.
I hate wind,, give me a calm raining day any time.

Thoughts on 10-12 mph wind, going out in the 2 mile wide Pax early morning?

Yikes, 15-30 is about 14-29 more than I like.

The weatherman did not lie for the Annapolis wind today. But the tide level prediction model was way off this morning. I launched at 7:30 am. High tide was supposed to be at 7:10. The water level was already like a very low tide, and it dropped while I was out. I fished in a tidal pond -- the narrow opening of the pond kept some of the wind from coming in, but occasional gusts were brutal. The low water took some of my preferred casting habitats out of play. It was hard work, but I managed to find 3 pickerel and 5 white perch before heading back to the launch. In my short travel between the pond mouth and my launch point, the wind and waves were unpleasant - closely spaced 1.5-ft chop that made exiting the water a wet proposition.

One of the great things about the many Severn creeks and tidal ponds I fish often is that it is usually possible to find some areas that are blocked from the wind by land masses. I fished yesterday in a different Severn spot. The launch point was in an exposed and windy spot, but 200 yds away the shoreline turned and blocked the wind. The areas I was fishing were very calm. You can improve your chances by studying wind predictions (wind speed and direction) and looking a Google maps to find waters protected from winds of that direction. I wrote an article on using online web information to help you plan your trip. It was published in the August 2020 issue of Rudow's FishTalk magazine.

Yep...Blowing at a steady 14 mph from the NE here in the Dena today.

I could find protection in one or more of 4 creeks accessible from Downs Park Locust Cove launch but at some point along the way, I'd get soaked. I'll wait for a calmer day.

Also, winds from the north wreak havoc with our tides. My guess is that this morning's high was not very high at all as John noticed above in the Severn.

Fishing is the leading cause of wind.

Yeah, it picked up around here, blowing good now.
Crossed the 231 bridge and saw someone fishing on a Hobie, white caps and all.

Lately I've been trying my hand at sailing the Hobie on windy days. It doesn't put any fish in the boat, but it's fun.
                        I need a good paddling

                            Going out in the AM,,,
                            1) Pedal 2 miles down the pax (then 2 miles back) to a large creek to chase snakeheads,, or
                            2) Launch at Brooms Island and pedal 1/4 mil into the river to go after Rocks?

Sneakheads I will be WAY up a creek somewhat sheltered, but 4 miles + to and from,
Rocks I will be out in the open, but a 5-10 minute pedal to and from the launch.
