  • Hard Deadline TODAY 5 pm Quiet Waters Harness Creek comments

    Hello all,

TODAY Tuesday 2/9/21 at 5 pm is the hard deadline for comments on the proposed Quiet Waters Park Harness Creek water access point. Please email Bruce Bruchey rpbruc20@aacounty.org by 5 pm today and ask for a small sandy beach to be added to the design. Attach a photo of your yak if you want (I know you all have photos of your yaks) and show the county that fishing yaks are too big and heavy to launch from a high floating dock.

Again, email comments by 5 pm TODAY to: Bruce Bruchey rpbruc20@aacounty.org

Anyone who in interested in using this potential new water access point can comment. You do not have to be a county resident. More discussion below if you want to dig into the details

    Thank, Lisa

As far as I know the Harness Creek project was designed without input from kayakers and kayak anglers. The 30% design plans are great for rowers, not so great for paddlers. This is a $2 million dollar project. The Harness Creek in Quiet Waters Park plan must be redesigned to support and encourage wide multi-sport general public access instead of narrowly designed for the special needs of one small sport.

30% Quiet Waters Harness Creek design plan: https://aacoprod.aacounty.org/AACOSe...wDcGXZBvMUFO8c

    1) The plan's high floating docks, designed for rowers, are hard for cartop boaters to use and non ADA compliant for kayaks. Add a little sandy beach for cartop boats using the Homeport Farm Park model. A beach is much easier for paddlers, including kayakers with disabilities, to use.

    2) Create a low grade ADA compliant transition from the boardwalk to the beach

    3) Boardwalks are slippery. Instead of a boardwalk, use a firm access path, like the Homeport Farm Park path, for the sloped / hill part of the access path - mixed pervious / impervious as necessary.

    4) Ensure that the Superintendent of Quiet Waters Park manages the Harness Creek water access point.

    5) Make the Harness Creek water access point first come, first serve for the general public, like every other water access point in the county. Water access at Harness Creek must not be rationed by the ARC boathouse.

    6) Make the $6 QWP vehicle admission fee be the only cost to use the Harness Creek water access point. Members of the general public must not be required to financially support the ARC boathouse in order to use the Harness Creek water access point. A boathouse shouldn't be a tollbooth.

Also, Harness Creek is supposed to be open 5 am to 9 pm so the rowing teams can practice. Ask for the Harness Creek access point be open to cartop boats the same hours so people can do dawn and evening paddles.

      Hello all,

UPDATE: The Office of Planning and Zoning (OPZ) EXTENDED THE COMMENT DEADLINE for Harness Creek Quiet Waters Park to Thursday, February 18, 2021.

You have another chance to email Bruce Bruchey rpbruc20@aacounty.org with your comments. Email Bruce and ask for a small sandy launch beach be added to the design. Attach a photo of your fishing yak and tell him him how long your yak is and how much it weighs fully rigged so the county sees how hard it is to pull a kayak up and down a steep hill. This design for was done for rowers, not paddlers and needs to be adapted so Harness Creek will be a welcoming launch for all to use. Also, the rowing club will be able to get into QuietWaters Park and on the water at at 5 am. We should ALL be able to get in a 5 a.m. Especially in the summer!

If you want to look at the plans go to https://www.aacounty.org/departments...ings-comments/ and click on "Past Meetings Available for Comments". Choose Harness Creek Paddling / Rowing Facility at Quiet Waters Park. The document links are in the lower right hand corner. Note the deadline at the top: "Please Note: This meeting's comment period will end on 2021-02-18"

Please include your first and last name and snail mail address so they know you are a real person. Remember, you don't have to live in AA County to comment.

Nope, I don't know why OPZ moved the comments goalpost.

      Thanks

      Lisa
