  • Where to find shad darts?

    Good afternoon everyone,

It is a beautiful day and I am looking forward to a trip to Fletcher's this weekend. I went to Bass Pro today and they are completely sold out of shad darts. I did order some on Amazon, but I would feel better if I could purchase some in person. Does anyone happen to know of a local store that has them in stock?

    Thank you,

    UnkleRob

Give Tochterman’s a call, they usually have a great selection.

      How many do you need?
I've got a mess of them already made up. Say 5 for $2.00?

      Colors:
      Green / Chartreuse
      Red / White
      Pink / White
      Orange / Yellow

      1/8 oz and 1 1/16 oz. A few at 1/4 oz.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get them to you by this weekend.

I’ve been fishing shad from shore at Fletchers for nearly 2 decades. I started out like most fishermen using standard shad lures like shad darts and nungessers spoons and caught fish. But over the years I’ve slowly switched over to using mostly 1.5” crappie tubes on a ~1/8oz jig head. The crappie tubes come in a huge variety of color combos. They are also readily available at most stores that have a fishing isle like WalMart. BPS has a bunch of them. Today I went to the BPS in Harrisburg, PA., and they had a big collection of crappie tubes to include my favorite orange/chart color combo.
At Fletcher my most favorite color combo has been the orange top and chartreuse tails on and orange jig head. This is how I rig them.
I use highviz Fireline braid, 8 to 10 pound is good. I then add at least 6’ of mono leader. Then I slip on a bullet weight and jam it in place with a round tooth pick. Then add a small swivel and then tie on the jig with tube. The swivel helps to stop the bullet weight from sliding down to the jig incase the tooth pick fails to hold the bullet weight in place. The bullet weight provides good distance and depth and it’s shape tends to slip over rocks better than a large split shot which tends to jam in amongst the rocks.

I have used Howard's technique with the bullet weight, swivel, small jig head, and small curly tail grub. It worked great for me several years at Chain Bridge. In fact, I have one dedicated spinning rod permanently set up with this bullet weight and swivel year around. In the summer I will fish a soft plastic worm and change the jig out for a bass hook. During shad season, I put the small jig head and crappie/bluegill grub on.

I forgot to include the picture of my favorite crappie tubes for shad I just bought from BPS yesterday. They measure out at 2” long and that’s good enough. Also, I buy the bullet weights in a couple different weights from .5 oz on down to 3/16oz. Also prefer the bullet weights coated with black powder paint. The PP coating really makes them slippery and I’m thinking that makes them slip over rock easier, just a wild guess there.

Thanks for posting the Shad fishing information. I caught my first Shad last April from a kayak and now I’m hooked...

I just bought a stack on Ebay, and they are the best looking darts I've seen. No paint in any of the eyelets either. He shipped them right away and had them in just a couple of days.
I was so impressed, I called him must to tell him how nice they were.

Don't know where everyone is, but Boley's Bait and Tackle in Boley's Quarters usually has a nice selection.
