  • Rabbit Fur Jigs

Fly fishing for pickerel this past winter reinvigorated my desire to do more fly fishing. Most of what I have been throwing for pickerel, bass, and snakehead have been streamers made with rabbit fur--a strip for a tail and a wrapped body, usually with some kind of bead head or fish skull cap--and it occurred to me that I could also make the same thing on a heavier jig I could cast on a spinning rod. I've done them in 1/8oz for perch, and 1/4 and 1/2oz for casting and trolling for stripers. The perch jigs have been killer so far, getting lots of action from perch and a few dink stripers. I haven't hit any good casting water for stripers, but I'm very excited for the fall. The rabbit fur has an incredible undulating action underwater and doesn't shred as quickly as soft plastics, and if I use plenty of superglue the thread holds well too.

I might go into production and start selling them, so if anyone is interested and you have specific color combos they like, let me know. Pics attached for reference

Update: the species list keeps growing for these jigs. Yesterday on the Severn River a cownose ray grabbed my jig and took me for a sleigh ride. Hell of a fight on an ultralight perch rod with 6lb test. I'm so surprised I didn't get spooled. I tried to pull the ray up by hand to unhook it and the hook straightened. Glad it doesn't have any jewelry messing up its ability to eat
