  • Friday fishing - Wye River

I am thinking of launching Fri morning at Wye Landing on the Wye River and working my way around as much of Wye Island as the wind will allow.

It is supposed to be windy again tomorrow, but not as strong as today. Hopefully I can find enough shelter to keep out of the wind. I have not fished in the Wye for more than a decade. My recollection is that it is a beautiful river with lots of casting and jigging opportunities.

Have any of your fished there recently?

That sounds like fun. The Wye is a beautiful river. Far enough up river, and you should have protection from the wind. Good luck.

i fished there just a little this spring. at that time, i found WP and catfish, and tons of minnows from the spawns i suppose. i didn't get one, but i would expect YP in that area also.

wish i could join you. if i was going, i'd definitely keep my eyes open for any grassbeds along the way for tossing those small spinnerbaits. not doing so in springtime was my only regret of the trip.

      good luck!

Good luck on Friday! It is supposed to be a nice weekend... a lil cool but sunny. I have heard there have been some breakers showing up at the mouth of the Wye. I haven't heard of a report from anybody fishing up in the Wye. I will post if I hear or see anything.

I want to fish tomorrow, but I think I'm gonna stay closer to home, probably hit the Patuxent either Kings Landing Park or Rt. 231 Bridge or Lower Marbolo Rd.

Anyone want to Catfish or whatever?

I launched at Wye Landing about 7:45 this morning. It was cool and windy. I saw a large flock of gulls diving lazily on bait about 1/2-mile from the ramp. There were some stripers underneath them, but they were picky about what they would hit. Because this was in an area where the wind was blocked by trees, it was nice and calm there. I trolled around an area the size of several football fields with various lures: a) jighead with Gulp mullet (this was the hot lure at Neavitt, but got only two fish in 3.5 hours); b) Woody's glow jig spinner (this got lots of stripers from 6" up to 16"); c) Rattletrap and later another hard plastic diving bait (no bites); d) a small Strike King Mini King spinnerbait (this is slightly larger than the Micro-King that I have used in the Severn to good success - no bites today); d) a Cicada blade bait (this got only one fish -- the smallest of the day -- about 6" and skinny).

I left the sheltered area and paddled about a mile on the branch of the river that goes off to the right from Wye Landing. The wind was stronger here plus I got no bites, so I returned to the first spot and picked up two more stripers.

I was off the water and loaded up by noon.
