  • Using an electric Fillet Knife

So i was standing in my dirty kitchen with a dead fish, electric fillet knife, beer and a camera. I have not seen any videos of cleaning fish on this site so i decide to throw a quick video together.

I still use the trusty razor sharp blade now and again but its nice to use the noisy, vibrating, Serrated blades of dismemberment once and a while.

Thats a perty looking filet. I've always been afraid of those electric filet knives for fear of screwing up the filet big time. Using a regular filet knife I usually leave the rib cage in tact on the fish, but I see that using the electric knife makes the method of cutting through the ribcage and then cutting off after a lot easier.

One tip for you and others that are interested that I've found very helpful in cleaning fish: put a big nail or sharpened piece of wire through the end of your fish cleaning board. You can poke the nail through the fish's eyes to help hold it while you are cutting off the filet and also use it to hold the filet when you are cutting it from the skin. Just poke a hole in the tail end of the filet and then poke the nail or sharpened wire through the hole.

I've got to say it was a scary movie....at one time or another I thought pinky, thumb and tape measure were going to bite it.....I guess that is great filmaking. Keeping the audience on their toes LOL

Great Video. I was thinking of getting an electric fillet knife. I was not sure whether to get the Rapala brand or the Piranha or Mr. Twister. I saw someone use the Mr. Twister to fillet a bunch of yellow perch. For every one fish we filleted with a regular fillet knife, he was able to do 3 or 4....wow.

haha it looked much safer when I had the knife in my hand but the video looks scary.

That electric knife is about to go in the trash can. It is dull now as you can see in the video.

Any recommendation on a good sharp electric knife?

I've heard good things about the Mr. Twister knife. I've only used one once, and I did a terrible job with it. The strategy is different than with a regular knife. Those fillets in the video looked nice.

Mike, can you get replacement blades for yours?
