Does Cooked Blue Crab Work?

I know cooked shrimp works just as well as uncooked shrimp for croaker. Probably works well for other species too.

Anyway, anyone know if cooked blue crab works for striper and tautog? I know uncooked crab works well with these species.

Probably would have some fish hits- but the cut crabs with fresh juices lay down a chum line back to the bait. Dead bait isn't as effective as live bait-

I will test few times for tog and other species
I will make sure I bring bring Old Bay and Beer just in case.

I think fresh crab with juice/guts works the best. Especially when there is some orange on there. I'm not sure if it's eggs or just guts, but the pieces with orange always got hit the quickest for me.

Hmmm... juices make sense. But shrimp bait doesn't include guts/juices and they work fine. Squid also is not used with guts/juices.

I ask about cooked crab because:
-leftover cooked crab availability
-quartered cooked crab can possibly keep longer
-doesn't smell as much
-maybe hold better in the shell?

If i went to the trouble of cooking the suckers they are going in my belly.

Fresh dead raw crab will outfish cooked crab 1000 to 1 in my case. No way im putting somthing that good on a hook.

I would pick my left over crab and make crab cakes from the meat.

i dont know if tog or srtipers will hit a cooked crab but if u have butter, JO or old bay i'll bring the beer
orange is a good color for tog im going to tie a few orange and sage green jigs to try on them this year

Ahhh....I get it. I'll mixed a batch of butter and beer and then soak the cooked crab in it.....say, overnight. Killer bait!
