  • Any protected areas to fish tonight?

Metroman and I are thinking of doing a night launch tonight... but with the winds forecasted in the teens going somewhere isn't really much of an option. Any intel on some protected areas that are fishy? We know of Weems, but have never fished there after dark. Anyone try or had success?

    Thanks,

Most of the Severn creeks will offer some sheltered spots because of the steep wooded shorelines. Look for a portion of the creek where a point of land blocks the wind. There are plenty of places in Weems where you can fish within a short paddle of the ramp. You could also launch at Truxton park and fish the upper end of Spa Creek. From Jonas Green, you could paddle to Carrs Creek on the north shore or College Creek on the south shore.

Good luck, but be careful. The water temp has dropped to the low 50s.

I spent two hours in a Severn tributary from 8:00 to 10:00 this morning. The wind was not bad at 8:00, but 30 minutes later it began to howl. I looked for shorelines that blocked the wind so my drift was not too fast.

I caught 3 pickerel in 15 minutes early on, then no bites the rest of the time. The first two pickerel spit the hook at boat side so I could not measure them. The third one, which looked to be the smallest of the three and skinny, measured out on my Hawg Trough at 17". I took a photo but after unloading it see that my jacket flap flopped in front of the lens so the fish is not visible.

All three fish were caught on a 4" chartreuse Gulp swimming mullet. That completes 5 straight days of fishing. I don't think I will be able to get out again for the next two weeks.
