Winds were low around that time. I wonder what happened.
Lucky he had his cell phone and it was dry.

+1 on that comment. Hope he does OK. I wonder what happened? did he get knocked off or just turtled on his own? Seems that there may be a PFD Lesson here... Glad he had one onTom Brown

Thanks for the heads up. Hope he will be all right.
I passed the word on at SOL. There are tons of Kiptopeake crazed kayakers on there. Figured they should hear about this story, too. Guys from as far away as NY with plans of hitting the area. That is quite the road trip.
Stay safe out there, guys.

Wow... hope he's ok.
Attaching your cell phone to your PFD is a great idea but there's still a possibility it will get wet. I think the most important thing to learn here is to never go kayaking alone when the water is this cold. Realistically, you should never go alone but it's not so bad to do in the summertime.
I wonder if he was wearing cold weather gear... I almost went in the water last weekend while fishing up at Kipto. Grilled and I were on some tog and I leaned a little too far, which is hard to do in the Outback. We both laughed about it but it's the reason we all suit up before heading out.2010 Hobie Outback

Crazy, I wonder if he was fishing or just going out for a paddle, they never said. Either way I'm glad he was rescued. They shot that kayak footage last night while I was there. One of the guys I was fishing with told me he was being filmed when he went back to shore to pee...

That's why I won't go in my kayak once the water temps start getting close to the 50s.... Even if it's calm conditions, user error can lead to a capsize. I fell out of my kayak back in October, conditions were calm, but I just wasn't paying attention and leaned too much of my weight to one side for too long. It happens.2010 Hobie Revolution 13

Heres the story from the guy... Crazy stuff... I'm still trying to figure out what exactly could have happened.

Lucky guy... Yeah I don't really understand what happened either. "flipped end to end" ... "iceberg"... Weird. 3 hours in the water. Tough guy! Happy ending.

That's bizarre...
"The boat was not just flipped over, it was like an iceberg. It was flipping end to end, side to side, and I was trying to hold on to that, and the phone over here," Bussart said.
He tried to steady his kayak for half an hour, but things just got worse.
"My gear was going everywhere. I had most of it lashed down. It was a struggle, a fight, and it had sucked my boots off of my feet, sucked my pants off," Bussart explained.
Floating in frigid waters and nearly naked, Johnny called 911 from his cell. Rescue crews rushed to find him.
He said the weather was calm, perfect conditions, yet from this description it sounds like he was in turbulent, rough, currents.2010 Hobie Revolution 13

Sounds like he doesn't have any idea what happened. I probably wouldn't remember either and would have probably thought that it was much worse. Either way, it was VERY bad....
Matt-- so he said it sank? Is that all he said?12' Kingfish
