She's got a big butt

I really like my Trevala jigging rod... 6'3", medium light, medium fast... the perfect companion... but she's got too big of a butt and I want to cut it off. I probably want to remove a good 4" from it. it's getting in the way when I'm on the yak.

Is it as simple as sawing it off with a metal-cutting blade or something and closing off the end? Or is there more to this? (I also intend to add a little weight to preserve the balance).

You can use a fine tooth hack saw blade. Cut it slowly so you get a nice clean cut. You can check out www.mudhole.com for more information and a new butt cap if you chose to add a new one.

Looks like you have the S grip. Know how the Trevala and S grip compare? Is the action the same? Is the S grip lighter? How many ounces?

Yeah, it's S-Grip. TSCV-63ML. I've never tried the regular trevala, so I'm not sure how it compares. Also can't find the weight published anywhere, so I'm not sure either. Sorry. All I can tell you is I had a blast catching a few fish on it yesterday... but that's probably true of any rod.... and other than the huge butt, it feels really good. Gonna cut that butt off for sure.

I cut my butt. Scariest thing ever, but I think I like it. I ordered a few different butt-ends from MudHole (thx for the link RockChaser) in the hopes that one of them will fit well. Can't wait to try it out on some unsuspecting fish...

Looking through MudHole makes me want to build a rod... cool stuff.

I thought you said 4"! LOL I wanna do the same thing to my Airwave and Bimini Bay said to go the hacksaw route, but I would be voiding my warranty... I might give it a go next season, but I'm gonna leave it be for right now.

Heh... yeah... just think "happy thoughts... happy thought..." while cutting into it. I cut about 6" so that it reaches about 2" from my elbow. I used a dremel with a metal cutoff wheel. It went right through the blank... pretty smooth cut.

I don't think I'll be needing those butt-ends I ordered.

I ended up finishing the end instead. I ground the blank down a bit to recess it inside the EVA, and filled the hole with an EVA plug I cut out of the leftover butt. After a little bit of sanding, it looks *almost* factory perfect. The balance feels fine without adding extra weight.

I should catch a lot more bigger fish now.
