  • Low Profile Baitcasters for bottom fishing?

    Hey all!
As some of you already know I got a Trevala for Christmas. I initially said I was gonna get S, but I dunno that I like not having a foregrip to hold onto. Anyway my question is have any of you guys used low profile baitcasters to bottom fish or jigging? I have been eyeing the Revo S and with 24 lbs. of max drag, the ability put a good amount of Power Pro on the spool and it being light and thought it might be a good choice... Plus I can also use it casting if I wanted to...

Have any of you guys tried a setup like this? I am thinking maybe for Tog or Stripers at the Bay Bridge.

    Thanks,
    MYT

MyT should be fine from the kayak, you really don't need that much line. 150 yds of 30lb braid will fill it up and that's more than enough. If you were going on a party boat I'd look into getting a reel with more capacity. Check out the jigmaster 501 (narrow) as a backup. Not as easy to cast but would make a nice heavier duty reel when you use it from a boat. The 146 squidder would be nice too, just hard to find.

Other cheaper low pro's to consider would be the bantam curado's or calcutta's. The S is nice and is only missing the mag breaks from the higher end model and maybe some bearings. If you can spring for it, get the Revo inshore or curado e7.
      Used to fish more.

I use a Curado 200E7 for jigging and bottom fishing off the yak. I like to use mono, so it holds about 140 yds of 12# big game. It's plenty. Of course, I never hooked up on a fish that would spool more than ten yards. I did catch a couple of sharks (2 to 3 feet each) at Lewes.

On a reel like that, you could go with 50# braid with about 140 yds.

Anyway, the BCs are nice. Light and easy on the arm. I like the Revo SX, which I may pick up soon. The drag is in the twenties. I also have a Quantum Tour Edition TE100.

Thanks guys... that gives me reassurance before I plop down some cash on a new reel!

Redfish, I am gonna give those other reels a look! I'm not locked into a choice just yet... I am still be patient and keeping an eye on the forums. Also I plan on looking to buy at some of the shows this year... so we'll see. The setup will be strictly for the yak. I still have my Avet if I need something that holds more line... this one will just be my REALLY light setup!

I use the Revo SXHS with 30# power pro and a Curdao 200E7 with the same- I have caught stripers to 28 inches on the Revo with no problem- can't see any issues with the low profile reels- from a boat or kayak any line capacity over 100 yards should be fine-

You might want to look at some round reels too. I also have and use a Luna 253 and a Calcutta 200B. These hold more line than the low profile BCs, and are fairly light at 10-11 ounces. The lightest Avets, I think the SX models, are at 14 ounces. Another light weight round reel is the Ambassadeur C3 5500. I think it's about 9-10 ounces.

I also use a Calcutta 400. At only 11+ ounces, it's my "heavy-duty" reel for the yak. I really don't need a heavier reel for the yak fishing I do.

ive got a quantum cabo s low profile baitcaster i use for just about everything. even having a fish pull line on you, you'll have plenty because your yak is going to move with you.

i have a LH revo s on st croix med x-fast. a new rod for Christmas, to replace the same thing i lost earlier this year.

what i like about the low-profile reel is letting out line with one hand. drifting away from your target area while jigging but you want to put out some line to stay near bottom there for a little longer?

do it all with your right hand.

press thumb button, raise rod tip to let out line, can feel the lure even while you're easing out line, repeat if needed. then you can reach under and hit the retreive lever with middle finger of that same hand to lock the spool again, or even hook a fish by holding thumb firmly on spool.

you can do the same thing with the calcutta 400. I agree it is a nice thing to have the ability to do.

I second the Revo SXHS. Mine has held up very well.

I think the flipping switch on my Quantum Accurist would be handy for togging, but I don't know how well it would hold up to full strength seawater.

It's all about the Curado 301HJ... Used it to fish in 180ft of water over the holidays and it worked like a champ. The Curado series is my favorite so far but the Chronarch looks like a nice reel as well. Might have to pick one up for this season.

I looked at Shimano's site at the Curados, but I don't see the 201E7 or the 301HJ. Did they change the part numbers?

the 301HJ is a Japanese Domestic I ordered off of Ebay and the 201E7 should be there. Look at tackledirect.com but I'm sure you can get it cheaper off of Ebay.
