    Hi all,
I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Pat and I'm 30 years old. I live in Baltimore City and work in Annapolis. I haven't been fishing in years nor do I own a kayak but I'm very interested in buying one and getting back into fishing. From reading multiple threads it seems like a Hobie kayak is the way I'd want to go. They are just so expensive! I might have to start with something less expensive. There is a member here who runs a trot line with his Hobie. I can see myself doing that as well. I just wanted to drop a few lines and introduce myself. Happy Fishing!

welcome Pat, go on craigslist and look for a used hobie or good sit on top kayak, most of us started on sit on top yaks and its good to learn the basics on a regular kayak. also look for demo kayak sales going on this time of year like easton cycles

Welcome! There's a few of us that run trotlines from our yaks, but you'll need a yak that can be powered by something other than your hands as you'll be needing them for more important things! MOC and I use Hobies and Metroman uses a Torque.

That's what this site is good for...growing the sport. When I first started thinking of running a trotline on the kayak I couldn't find anyone that's done it or at least posted any kind of information. So through experimenting and sharing, others have done similar things and modified it to use their own methods and tricks and have shared them. We're all learning from each other which is what's awesome about the site.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'd love to have a Hobie but I've seen some nice setups were guys had a trident with a trolling motor attached. I'm thinking that would be the cheaper way to go but I'm not sure how safe that setup would be on the bay. I have a friend who has a canoe with a trolling motor that he uses up pretty boy which works out pretty good. I'm going to keep checking craigslist to see whats out there. I figure now is a good time to buy.

Welcome! Good luck keeping your money once you're hooked!

The advantage of Hobie Mirage yaks are pretty obvious... your hands are free to fish while you move or stay in place pedaling against the current... Your leg muscles are usually stronger than your arms, so theoretically, you can go farther and faster with pedals. But yeah... more expensive... but compared to a boat, even a very simple boat, it's dirt cheap.

Easton Cycles have a sale on right now. 20% off new yaks and I think up to 40% off on demo units....just a thought.

I emailed them earlier and found out some prices. Is something like an 11' Trident pretty stable on the bay?

Before I bought my Trident 13, many said they wouldn't go smaller for open water. They were right. I do a lot of open water trips in the Bay with up to 4' chops, and I get wet rides. It can get scary out there. I wouldn't go smaller, unless you get a wider yak in the 33-34" range.

Thank you! That's great information to know. I'm working with limited storage and 13' is as long as I'd like to go.

Hobie really is the best, but it is pricey. My wife bought me my first and only kayak (which is a 13' Ocean Kayak) on Fathers day last year, and I'm absolutely addicted! Very stable a wide sit on top kayak. I also frequently stand up on it to fish. All of that for around 60 pounds. My Ocean Kayak is not as graceful trolling as a Hobie, but I have done it and caught fish trolling. Just need a properly located rod holder and some healthy paddling arms. If you do decide to go with the less expensive Ocean Kayak route, consider finding a model that has rod holders where you want them. The Prowler that I bought came with no rod holders, but not a problem. I bought a mod pod that comes with a multitude of slots to move around multiple rod holders at various locations and angles quickly and easily. A simple milk crate with cheap PVC rod holders also provide some additional options going straight off the back. Trying to engineer your rigging on cheap is half of the fun for me, although I still do dream of getting my first Hobie in the next year or two. Once you become addicted and you are near the bay, you will inevitably want to get into a Hobie. Until you can afford it, there are plenty of good times to be had paddling to get to your fish.

The Trident is fine dude ......... it will get you where you want to go ........ most guys here either started with one or are very happy with them ......... like anything else it's what fits you and what you like ........ for the bay it's a decent yak at least 12 ft .........

That said ........ many of the guys moved to the Hobies because it allows you to fish hands free ..........

Bottom line ....... go Yak fishin ........ it's a blast no matter the ride ...... and no one will fault you for your yak selection ........ we're all bros with different tastes bounded with our love for yak fishing and our desire to share ......

Karabunga Dude ....... Yak on ........ Hope to meet ya at the Meet and Greet Saturday ........
