I got one of these, cheaper than some of your higher end options, good kayak to start with. It's a good model for the money, pretty stable. It's center console is nice with a scotty rod holder right there, but it does cut back on leg room. I only flipped it once last season and that was due to user error, I leaned way too far to one side and wasn't paying attention.

I got the 2010 model in 2011, it went on sale with Amazon around March for $618 shipped (including freight). If you want to wait for a sale like that, hold out a bit. Remember that on top of the cost of the boat itself, you're going to need a lot of unique "kayak" safety/fishing gear, especially if you've mostly been shoreline fishing for most of your life.

Welcome, Hope you enjoy your new hobbie. There will be several new or slightly used (Demo's) Hobie's at our Swap Meet which is on March 3rd at the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Station 4498 Mountain Rd in Pasadena. I will have the Flyer up on here within the next couple days. Backyard Boats is bringing a trailer with a few and there is also a member on here who is selling a fully rigged 3 yr old Yak. If you want to start off Cheap, BassPro has a Yak rigged for fishing, (2 flush mounts and one forward of the seat rod holder) that retails for about $400. There are also several other sites on the net that have used Yaks for sale as well as Craigslist or some of the online auction sites. You should try to make the swap meet. There will be alot of stuff there to get you going.
Hope to see you on the water...

Thank you. Honestly I'd love to have a kayak before March 3rd but the way things are going I probably won't unless I find a smoking deal. I'd actually prefer a used kayak because I believe I can get more for my money as long as the thing floats. lol I'm really leaning towards the ocean kayak trident 13. I've seen guys on youtube that have had their trolling motor mounted on this and were still able to crab. I'm after a yak that will allow me to fish and crab. I'd love to have the Hobie but I can't justify the cost of how I'd want it setup right now. Eventually I want to buy the Humminbird 385ci and mount it to the yak unless I find one that already comes with a fish finder. Until then I have my eyes peeled. The yak you mention for $400 at bass pro... do you know the length? I'm unable to find it on the website. As of now I do plan on making it to the meet. Thanks!

Yes the BassPro Ascend FST12 is a 12ft SOT and is a Paddle Yak. I suppose you could rig a trolling motor to it and go that route. I have that very Yak and its a cool boat. I have the 385ci and I just bought it last fall. I have the predicessor to that which I plan to sell at the swap meet. It is the Hummingbird 160 in B&W and comes in its own pouch with a battery and a transducer. However I don't have the Transducer for it. Actually I do have it I just don't have the end of the cable that plugs into the back of the unit. Long story... Anyway, The transducer for that unit is about $50. I will have the entire unit with me at the swap meet if you want to take a look at it. I believe there may be a couple of OK's there if I can get Easton Cycle and Kayak to come. They are your best bet for a used or new OK. BassPro also sells OK's and have a nice selection there at the store.
          Good Luck on your search.
