  • Anyone interested in doing mini tournaments for the M&G's?

I was thinking (I know, dangerous), we could offer mini-tourneys at the M&G's. Interested parties could put up a nominal fee for entry (like $5 or $10) and have winning categories like biggest targeted species (obvious), biggest non-targeted species, weirdest catch (living).

    For example:

    February-Susky Flats-Yellow Perch
    $5 to enter
Biggest YP gets 40% of pot
50lb Catfish, 8lb Smallie, or 38" Striper, etc 30% of pot
Mud turtle (I actually caught one of these while panfishing in VA) gets 20% of pot
MKF gets 10% of pot (could help with site, stickers, flyers, whatever)
Any pot not won gets split between other pots.

Just a thought to liven things up, feel free to offer any suggestions.

Sounds cool! Didn't we used to do this with lures?

Sounds like a good, fun idea. Just need to hammer out details with regard to catch & keep, vs CPR if not keeping...standard measuring device, etc.

We did it before but it never seemed to work out right so it seemed to go away ........... and it seems more fun to me at least to just see the guys and share the techniques and lures etc ......... you get less of that with competition ........

We started out doing this with everyone putting a lure in a pot and it does create some fun competition. There are members that don't want to compete and that is their perrogative, but if someone wants to organize it for each one then go right ahead.

I was looking into creating monthly CPR challenges through CBKA that would target our local species that are popular at the time and would possible revolve around the M&G's. Where there would be prizes and also raise part of the money for charity. But I just don't have the time to organize it currently as a lot is going on with getting the 2012 CBKA Tournament together. Nay Sayer if this is something you may be interested in organizing send me a pm, and I'll let you know what I came up with.

I think TJ's friend that came out for his first kayak trip ever walked away with the loot at the bay bridge m&g way back when. I liked the lure pot, but others didn't want to compete, just talk.

I remember being against the money idea because it made things seem less friendly. The idea was to bring a new version of a lure you use and like and put it in the pot. The person who caught the largest of the species the m&g was targeting gets the whole bag. Kinda fun and a good way to share on tactics/justify our winter tackle acquisitions.
              Used to fish more.

We can do the lure idea for the Feb M&G for biggest YP. I think its important to keep it simple for these to keep it just as a friendly meeting of anglers.

Maybe I'm a party pooper, but I thought the whole idea was to meet and greet, particularly for the new guys. When I attended the first one last year it was about meeting and greeting. Now you want to focus on competition and winning a prize? Even if participation is optional, you divert the focus.

I don't think it changes the intention to focus on competition, but there is nothing wrong with a friendly challenge. I don't think some one is not gonna help show someone how to fish for a new species becuase there is a bucket of lures on the line or whatever...

Meeting and Greeting is still the idea, but after awhile a good solid core is there all the time, if they want to have a friendly competition they should be entitled to that too. And IMO ive never gone somewhere to kayak fish not intending to catch fish... I think thats consistent among everyone.

                      Maybe I'm wrong...

And it doesn't really matter to me personally, I just enjoy the fishing whether there is competition or not. I'm just playing Devil's Advocate...

I say those that want to do it, put in your lure before hand, and those that don't then don't...

so that means those that opted out when you catch the biggest fish of your life don't come crying trying to win all the prizes now... lol

.... and intimidate the timid .......... the grand majority of the members have never been to a M&G and we've had alot more people coming out of the shadows to the M&G's since the competition went away ...... friendly competition is fine but you don't open up and share as much when you are trying to win something ..... Mike and I probably wouldn't have been talking about the lures we were using and how we fished them ....... he wouldn't have seen the lure I caught the catfish on or how well it worked ........

You want to do it then fine but I'm with Tufnik .......... it's a M&G ..... not a tournament ........

That's exactly my point, Memory. I had a chance to talk to a lot of guys during my first M&G. Got the chance to relate faces to screen names. Even on the water, there was casual chat. There was no rush to catch fish.

If you want competition, there are tournaments out there. The thing about tournaments is that the main objective is to catch fish, not to take the time to talk to your fellow yaker. That's why I like our M&Gs. We get to Meet and Greet.
