  • Jigging for Eurasian perch

I found a cool video demonstrating a jigging spoon for Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis), which is a sister species of yellow perch. One thing I've noticed in the underwater perch videos I've seen is that they miss the lure quite a lot. I guess they're not the smartest fish in the school.

Very cool video. Thanks for the link.

I love the first part. The second perch grabs the jig away from the first and is yanked up. The other perch has a WTF look on its face.

Cool, thanks for sharing! I like when the crayfish grabs the jig at the end.

Very interesting video of fish doing their thing. What surprised me the most was, in spite of the fact the spoon body was bright and shiny, nearly all the perch specifically targeted the treble hook. What's up with that?!?!?

In some of the shots the lure's treble hook did seem to have a bit of something attached to the hook. Sorta looked like something about the size of a orange salmon egg.

Now I'm thinking maybe I should be dipping my treble hooks in some chartreuse or limetreuse powder paint.... or at the least tie on a little hair and tinsel... or anything to attract farther attention to the hook.

thanks for sharing. I LOL'd at every fish that got yanked up on the hook set. The first one was the funniest. The bystander perch was like "damn...where'd he go?"

That was real funny to me Bill. The perch reminded me of Dora on Finding Nemo.

That first scene really cracked me up, too. I didn't even notice they were hitting the hook because I was too busy watching them miss. I have some old Mepps Syclops spoons that have flo. orange surgical tubing on the hook shank, and Swedish Pimples and Johnson Sprite spoons come with a flo. orange plastic blade on the hook split ring. I guess that's why.

I haven't used mepps spinners for a decade or more. But come to think of it they do have a short piece of red plastic tubing on the shank of the treble hook.

I was re-organizing all my tackle AGAIN today. Sorting out stuff I haven't used for a couple of years... (then balling it all back up again and throwing it back in the bag). Hate that job, never know when something I'm considering retiring will come in handy some day/year.

While doing this task I did take note that the hair tails on a lot of my jigging spoons are looking pretty dirty/scuffy. After seeing that perch video I'm thinking the hooks should be replaced with something a little more fisheye-catching.

That was funny, Bill. LOL! Fish don't seem all that bright. Makes me wonder why we can't catch more of 'em! Oh. Wait...
