  • Tarpon 160

Hello everyone, so I'm finally getting a chance to get a SOT and I'm leaning towards the Tarpon 160. I'm taking a 160 and a 140 out next week to see what I like better, neither has a rudder. Does anyone have any experience with the Tarpon series, especially the 160? I would love to hear some opinions. Im super pumped to get a new boat.

    Thanks

I woud say the 14 over the 16, just cause its a little easier to manuever around structure and you shouldn't lose much speed or trackability from the 16. The tarpon 12 is pretty popular too.

I don't have any experience with the tarpons but a 16 foot yak is big! Like Matt said, for maneuverability and ease of transport, a 12 to 14 foot yak would be better and would be fine for fishing the Bay.

Annapolis Canoe and Kayak had a nice Tarpon 14 demo boat for sale. I think the price is $535.

I fished yesterday in Spa Creek (Severn River) with a guy who paddled a Tarpon 16. It was a nice looking boat, but it was definitely long. I agree with the earlier comments that by adding two feet of length, you compound your storage and transportation challenges. Unless you are planning frequent ong paddles over open water, I don't think the extra two feet are needed.

I fish on the Bay a lot (with 3-4' chops), and my Trident 13 is just right. Good manueverability around pilings and rocks too. I wouldn't go longer than 14, unless you do a lot of touring.

I love Kayaking, and do not see it as simply a fishing platform. I do go on trips and I think the 160 would aid with more storage and better paddling performance for a long trip. I am very concerned about its manuveurring as compared to the 140. I will have to see what I like when I take them out this week. I think the test rides will be the determining factor for me. Thanks for all the input! Ill let you guys now what I end up in later this week.
