  • Where are you fishing on Saturday?

I think I'll have time to fish on Saturday, and I was trying to decide where to go. A few options I was considering were Allen's Fresh, the Patuxent at Wayson's Corner or Jug Bay, or hitting a creek off the Patuxent to do some recon.

    What are everyone else's plans?

Weather forecast looks terrible. High winds. Sunday looks like better day. Good luck out there.

I like the hourly wind forecast information from the Windfinder site. Sat looks like a good day to stay off the water at least around Annapolis http://www.windfinder.com/weatherfor..._naval_academy

I have some projects to catch up on at home on saturday, but I'm hoping to get out to the Patapsco for some trout on sunday for a couple hours.

I am going to try Allen's Fresh at dawn.(wind and all). Yellows are moving well. Worried that it will be a short run.

I am looking at getting out on my canoe on Sunday from Fort Washington Marina. It was one of my friend's birthday and he wanted to try and catch one of those big blue catfish. So I am taking the canoe instead of my yak so I can take him. I heard they caught a new state record yesterday near that marina. The winds so far are predicted to be light.

Any advice on bait and hook size to catch a 20 to 60 pound catfish?

                  Martin,

If you can find a bait shop with left over shad for bait that will work. You could even use chicken livers, but from what I've read, the bigger fish like the bigger baits. I know if the Potomac is not too wind blown, make your way North to at least the channel in front of Ft. Washington. The new state record came from south of the Woodrow Wilson little less than halfway south to Ft. Washington. That entire area there has plenty of big fish.

I'd use 8/0 circle hooks and enough lead to keep your bait on the bottom in the current. Good luck out there. Please let us know how you do.

I will have a trolling motor and anchor. I will definitely let everyone know how I do....now to find some shad.

In the fish tank at Bass Pro Shop! I'll be manning the table all day.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the BPS thing. Unfortunately, I don't have that much time to travel.

I was thinking about going regardless of the wind. Last time I cancelled because of the forecast, everyone had a really good day. I'm leaning toward Allen's Fresh because of proximity and the fact that my Tarpon is already loaded.

Martin--your fish finder rig and the 8/0 hook suggested earlier should work for the cats. They seem to bite better when you're anchored. Maybe it gives them time to zero in on the bait from the scent trail. If you want to get fancy, you could add a float to the leader somewhere between the hook and the swivel to keep your bait up off the bottom. Blue cats are up in the water column more than channels. The biggest fish Kevin and I caught on our Potomac trip came on a rig with a float, but that fish was far from being a monster.

I've had pretty good success on the susky reservoir for flathead cats using black salties for bait or live creek chubs if my budy can catch them. Flatheads prefer live bait and usually wont hit cut bait. Does anyone use salties or creek chubs for bluecats?

Ryan--to my knowledge, the preferred live/cut bait for blues are gizzard shad and eels, but I don't see why salties wouldn't work. I think anything they can fit in their mouth is fair game. It might be hard getting a large enough salty to entice a really big cat, but you never know.

I'm pretty sure Captain Mike Starrett uses the salties and cut gizzard shad and he catches monster blues in that area. If you are looking for shad they are schooled up at the discharges right now or were a few weeks ago. I got one nice cat from the occoquan so far on a float rig a few feet off the bottom, might be worth trying with one of your lines. Good luck!!!
                              Used to fish more.
