  • Friday Fishing

Anyone heard any reports from this week about the Yellow Perch at Jug Bay?

Thinking about giving it a try, would anyone be interested? Looks like it will be a decent day in the 50's

I might be able to fish Friday. It depends how tomorrow and Thursday shake out at work. When were you thinking of fishing?

        most likely in

I haven't heard or been checking any reports, but I have a buddy on Lyon's Creek who I can ask. I'd imagine any action that he's seen in the creek or on the river by his place would be similar to what's going on in Jug Bay. I am nearly positive I'll be off work on Friday, in which case I'd be up for some fishin. I'll check back tomorrow and Thursday once I know for sure.

For what it is worth, I had an email from a friend who fished there on Mon from his power boat. He caught a large bunch of yellows and a big crappie or two but added "Perch run just about over. White's will run next week.".

He has fished there twice this week, but not before then. You can make your own judgement on how accurate his assessment is.

It is also worth considering what effect today's rains may have on drainage into the Patuxent. I have not heard anything about how much rain is expected today and how rapidly it may fall and runoff.

Depending on winds and current, I might get talked into another Patuxent trip. Of course, the great Baltimore striper report by HJS yesterday is calling me too.

Matt and Knot--Given the predicted currents, it might be best to launch in the morning from Jug Bay around 9 or 10am, or so, ride the current upstream to the hole at Western Branch, fish until 2 or 3, then ride the current back to the launch. I'm still not certain about my schedule, though, so you guys can plan for what's best for you.

At that location, you are correct that tides play a role -- wind does too. I checked the wind and tide for Fri using the www.windfinder.com site. It provides hourly projected wind speeds and direction and also shows the tidal cycle for any monitoring station. There is a station for Jug Bay (actually at the Rt 4 bridge 4 miles north of Jug Bay). For Friday, the wind ranges from 3 mph from the east at 7:00 am to 14 mph from the SSE at 2:00 pm. Low tide is at 6:20 am and high tide is at 12:33. The tides at Jug Bay itself (4 miles downstream) will be slightly different than these.

Launching at the Jug Bay ramp (PG County side) would allow an upstream paddle of ~1 mile with an incoming tide and a nearly neutral wind. Returning at late morning would have a nearly slack tide but paddling against a wind.

Launching at the Waysons Corner ramp (AA County side -- at the Rt 4 bridge), you have a 2.5 mile downstream paddle against an incoming tide. Coming back at noon, the tide would not be much of an issue, but the wind would be at your back.

These are the projected conditions. The unknown factor is how much higher than normal the river will be running because of yesterday's rains. That could throw off otherwise good planning.

I am going to try to get out there Fri morning. I am unlikely to launch before 9:00, and don't yet know if I will launch from Waysons Corner or from Jug Bay.

I am most likely going to launch at Jug Bay (Jackson Landing). This adds 15 mins to the car trip, but saves 20-30 mins of paddling, especially with the wind and current. I will have live minnows and some small soft plastics and Gulps to fish on bottom rigs.

I will aim for 10:00, but if I get out of the house earlier, I may get a head start.

It's your call, but expect a lot of mud. Went to Wayson's and watched the gents on the pier. After an hour I had seen 1 eel (12"), 4 mud cats (3-4") and 1 yellow perch(maybe 9") caught. Tide was very high and starting out at 11 AM. Took these pics at 12 - 12:15
waysons pier beside rt. 4 bridge.

Plenty of water in the creek for a launch.

Two miles away, this is Western Branch passing under 301. You can see it's still way out of it's banks

Heading home WB was still bank full beside the courthouse on Water St

Ooof. I was wondering how bad the rain was up there. We got over an inch in Solomons.

It looks like I'm out anyway. I've got unavoidable vehicle and work issues to deal with tomorrow, unfortunately.

Good luck if you guys go, and be careful. I've read about kayakers needing to be rescued on the Patuxent after heavy rains in the past.

I was thinking about joining you, but my new PA is the ivory dune. Horrible thought seeing it with a mud ring around the middle. Maybe next time.
