  • Citation Plaque

Thought you might want to see what it looks like. Got it in the mail the other day. It's for the tog I caught at CBBT in Dec. If you keep the tog, the citation is issued based on weight (must be nine or more pounds).

Pretty nice, and I imagine they give out hundreds of these for many species each year. Actually, I didn't realize the tackle shop guy marked the "Plaque" box on the citation until I got home. If he had asked me at the time, I would have preferred a paper citation.

Way nicer then the MD one.

MD sent mine in a brown envelope, surprised it made it in one piece

        Great catch

How do you get a citation? Can you take a photo to a citation station or do you have to take the fish?

I prefer paper because it takes up less storage space. Since this is my first plague, I guess I'm glad I got it, even though it's made of some type of pressed fiber board with mahogany finish. My other citation (paper) was for a 42" striper. I now have two citations in my lifetime of fishing.

The Virginia plaques do look nice. But I have no problem with the Maryland citations. I got one for my 13.5" white perch caught on Jan 1. Because I caught the fish, photographed it, then released it, I also received a Catch and Release Citation.

While the MD citation is only a piece of paper rather than a wooden plaque, catching a citation-sized fish does enter an angler in the Maryland Fishing Challenge, which offers some significant prizes. That is worth more to me than the citation itself.

If you C&R, you take a picture of it with a ruler. Take the pic to an authorized tackle shop and they will write it up. The citation is issued based on length. You need to present your fishing license. Tell the fellow you want a plague or paper certificate (I didn't know this).

If you keep the fish, of course, bring it to the shop. The citation is issued based on weight.

So, you got to know the limits (weight or length) of the species for a citation. In my case, I didn't know the limits for togs, but I knew it was big and I took it in. I kept the fish because I wanted dinner.

This is good info. After I caught my citation sized white perch in Jan, I went to the MD DNR website to find out how to get the citation (and entry into the MD Fishing Challenge). The instructions on the website are not at all clear. The first two times I submitted information, nothing happened. The procedure must be initiated by a tackle shop that has registered with DNR. A list of those shops can be found on the website. You take either your actual fish, or in the case of a catch and release fish, you take a photo showing your fish next to a measuring device. The tackle shop will measure the fish or verify your photo, then give you a receipt with a number on it. When you get home, you enter the number and some other info about you and the catch onto the DNR website. That gets you into their system. I received my two certificates about a month after I submitted the info.

As as aside, I saw DNR Fisheries' Marty Gary last Sat at a show. I told him that the website instructions are confusing and should be revised and clarified. He agreed and said he would look into it.

Did they change the rules? I got a C&R citation for a Channel Cat a couple of years ago and I just sent in the filled out form and picture.

I tried that last October and again in January. Nothing ever happened. I emailed Keith Lockwood at DNR and he told me to get the ticket number from a tackle shop first.

my MD citation came in the mail pretty rumpled, at least they could put some cardboard in to stiffen up the envelope.

got 2 VA citation for tuna, paper not plaques
