Rain fishing?

I'd be interested to know what you guys think about fishing out in the rain.. safety and then techniques. This Saturday is going to be wet with 30% chance of thunderstorms. Now if it thunders Ill be out of the water waiting it out, but if the noise holds up I want to get in.

I have had one of my best days kayak fishing for rockfish on a day with clouds and showers. It had rained on and off that day. There was a period when it looked like it would clear. I went to the launch and put in. After fishing for a little while it started to rain. Many of the boats on the river had gone in. The fish stared breaking in several spots on the river. They come up a short distance from where I was fishing. I caught 23 stripers with the largest being 27" and no undersized fish. It was great. I caught most of the fish in a 200 yard area. Good rockfishing is known to be in some of the worst weather. In years past, when I had a boat, I had even caught rockfish in snow furries. Sometimes you just gotta go fishing.

I hear ya. I grew up fishing on Lake Erie but hardly ever on a boat, which is way I have the questions. One winter I was fishing from a pier, about this time, for rainbow trout in the middle of a blizzard. My Dad thought I was crazy and stayed in the car. I landed a 26" female and 22" male. The only one in sight catching fish.

every single one of my best days of catching has been in the rain. that said, i keep aware of lightning, wind and seas. just keep an eye on the weather before launch and during. summer storms in the mid atlantic can get crazy

Fishing In The Rain

Generally fishing in the rain is no big deal as the fish are already wet.

Fishing and getting wet and then cold is not chic and hypothermia is not chic either. So for that, i have a plan, basically a duck hunting wardrobe. But fishing in lightning is something that no professional guide can afford or wants to do and it should be avoided.

In a powerboat, we seek to get off open water and not make ourselves a target. Under a low bridge is good shelter. In somebody's boathouse or tight up alongside a boat house offers protection. In a kayak, it seems to me, that just getting along the shore near a cutback bank, under a dock, or similiar is better than open water. In any situation lightning is not to be trifled with and the best course is to have an exit plan, and to move quickly to execute that plan before bad things happen.

Saturday is supposed to have early morning thunderstorms coming through the area- with heavy showers; it is best to just wait the weather out and go in the afternoon when it is supposed to be sunny.

I have a lightning rod to charge my fishfinder. Works great! The fish just seem to float right up.

Haha, do you need a license for that? Hopefully today's forcast will show an accurate picture of what tomorrow will bring. Ill try and shoot the gap if there is one.

Occoquan. Seems to be a pretty safe place just incase it gets nasty. Ive never been. Depending on how it goes I may try again Sunday.
