The pickerel that I have lost this winter were not due to bite-offs from their teeth -- rather they were typically breaks offs when the fish lunges. Their jaw structure can rub across the line and weaken it. Plus when you have your hand on the line or leader a few inches above the lure in preparation for lifting the fish, then the fish lunges, that sudden change in direction can break a line. I think a 14-lb leader will be just fine. Most of the time I fish 8-lb mono with no leader. Some days I tie on 20-lb fluoro leader because that is the leader material I have on hand.

I will plan on being there around 6:30am. I probably will bot launch until 7 or 7:15am by the time I put on my gear and setup my yak for a beach launch.
