  • Return to Mattawoman Creek

I am trying to open my schedule for a trip to Mattawoman Creek this Saturday. The long range weather forecast looks good.....so far. 67 degrees, 8 mph winds from the East, and sunny to partly sunny. I have family obligations on Sunday, so Saturday will be my day to get some excercise in. Come one, come all...whoever is interested.

Hey Moc looking for a place to paddle this weekend for sure. Just brought home my GF new kayak today and we need somewhere calm to go so she can get comfortable on it. How bad is the boat traffic in mattawoman?

Very little. Very kayak and canoe friendly.

Moc- I promised my buddy John a groundhog hunt this week in Southern PA since we were rained out this past weekend- I might be able to swing Saturday on the Mattawoman- If I do, I want to target snakeheads and big bass- I have several bags of catfish filets so i'm good for a while on the blue cats- delicious, though- and a very dependable fishery- Figure the cold snap in the morning will be long gone by Saturday-

I really want to try a day on St. Jerome Creek fishing for stripers (catch and release)- Figure the fish are there and I want to see if my rigs are going to work the way I think they will- (I keep tinkering with Pacific coast and Gulf coast fishing techniques to see if we can adopt them here)

Ok the weather has improved for Sat. The rain will come in Friday night and end in the morning on Sat 59 degrees. Partly sunny in the afternoon. Winds will be 12 mph, but that area is fairly protected.

This is an area close to Mattawoman, and it looks like the high Tide is after mid day. So I will try to fish the high tide, 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after. Lets just say that I will be there at the boat launch at 11am.

Moc I will see you there. I may get there a little earlier but will probably be 200 yards to the right of the ramp hunting catfish.

Indian Head is the tides for Mattawoman Creek, but the tides seem to run differently than the tide charts- my two inch original floating Rapala fire tiger lures were delivered by the mailman this afternoon, so I probably will fish Mattawoman creek sometime this weekend- I am going groundhog hunting in Southern PA this week, so I have to spend one day with the family...and the doormat Flounder have showed up in Quinby....

Hi Ron, what are the color patterns of the fire tiger or could you post a pic of one?

Also, Rockchaser, what time do you plan on arriving at Mattawoman on Saturday?

                            Martin -

I would like to join the group on Sat morning. I have never fished there and don't have any idea on how to rig up or what species are likely to be there. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

                              Mattawoman Creek:
                              Bass
                              Catfish Crappies
                              Snakeheads

Firetiger lures: Bombers, rattletraps and spinner baits for bass, and snakeheads
plastics rigged weedless if the weeds are up.
There is a deep hole just up river from the Slavin's ramp where you can catch Catfish on cut bait.
Further up river is a barge on the right and a sheet metal wall on the left where I have done fairly well with spinner baits.
The bass hit best on an outgoing tide and the current flow can be pretty quick.
