  • Snakehead Contest

Saw this today, got me wanting to go looking for snakehead. Especially since there was only like 70 people entered last year.

    Check it out: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/04/05...ish-from-hell/

Let's Put A Kayak Calcutta within the Tx

I'll sponsor it with some prizes.

Is it most number of snakeheads , biggest, or most total inches ?

I think you just catch at least one, regardless of size. Post the pic, and they will pick the winner.

I, like many, have tried to catch them. Went three times to Mattawoman last year. Nada. Yet some people catch them without even trying. It's on my Catch List for 2012.

the thing sponsored by MD DNR is a raffle, everyone who catches and kills one gets an entry. But you could definitely start a kayak bounty on the forum for them.

My thought, if your willing to sponsor you make the final call on specification of winner.

I like your idea a lot. I plan to target them some this year too!! I would be willing to throw a Hobie Hat or something like that into the pot.

Yeah I thought the DNR contest had more prizes than it really does. I think a forum bounty would be awesome. Im going to head to the potomac a few times this year just for snakeheads. Unfortunately I dont have much to offer in terms of prizes.

            http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries...-Clarification

The Prizes for the Snakehead Drawing are a Single $200 Bass Pro Shops Gift Card, a Single Maryland State Parks Pass, and a Single Potomac River Fishing License
Due to some inaccurate reporting, there is some confusion among hopeful Snakehead anglers regarding the prize structure for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ promotion to encourage the catching and killing of northern snakeheads.

First—there is no cash award for catching and killing a snakehead.
Second—this promotion is limited to recreational fishing only.
Third—there are a total of three prizes—a $200 gift card from Bass Pro shops, a 2013 Maryland State Parks pass, and a 2013 Potomac River fishing license provided by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission.
All entries must be registered on the DNR Angler’s Log (dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/fishingreport/log.asp) along with a clear photo of the dead Snakehead.
Fish do not need to be taken to a DNR approved citation award center for registration into contest.
Finally—Any angler who catches and kills a snakehead with a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service tag attached can collect an embroidered “Snakehead Control” cap by reporting the tag along with details of the location of the catch by calling (800) 448-8322.
The three winners will be chosen in a random drawing on November 30, 2012.

              bdwilliams,
              Thanks for the details.

              I found this one interesting.

If they are marked for eradication why is the DNR tagging and releasing them.

I have had to tell several people to stop saying
"Maryland is giving you $200 per snakehead".
Hell if that were the case I would have a new job hunting snakehead.

If they were serious they'd do what we do in Oregon and Washington State to keep Squawfish predation of salmon down...$4 per fish up to 400 fish...MORE $$ if you catch more than 400!!

Maryland Kayak Fishing, Tx within a TX

I'll sponsor two prizes within these parameters : largest (measured end to end) and most total inches of snakeheads. And the contestant must be a registered member in good standing on this forum. Each prize $100 cash.

However, we need a Judge and an administrator of this tx as I'm not either.

                        What Happened To This ?

I repeat my offer, I'll sponsor two cash prizes within the MKF forum community on this Tx as a promotional for my kayak ferry/mothership service.

We need somebody on this forum to judge the MKF contest. I'll pay $100 for the longest snakehead and $100 for the most aggregate total inches of snakeheads.

Provided : Must be a registered member of MKF in good standing, and must actually catch the snakesheads from a kayak. You guys want sponsorship, there it is. Or do you want to just have our own tx ?

                          tagging...

F&W need to track migration/movement routes so they can determine how far spread the invasive population is and has expanded. Without tagging and allowing them to go where they may and finding them in the same body of water (doubtful) they can determine the annual expanse of the population. One thing to remember about these fish is that they have an organ, albeit primitive, but very necessary for their survival. It is a simple labyrinth and it extracts oxygen from the atmosphere. Their gills by themselves cannot extract enough oxygen to maintain their physiological needs. Therefore they surface to "gulp" air. And you can use this gulping action to sight them. They can live in oxygen poor aquatic habitats where others aquatic life would not survive. They will attack and eat ANYTHING that moves! The female is extremely aggressive while tending her brood which can number in the 10's of thousands! There are at least 2 species establish in Maryland/Virginia waters...perhaps more!

Channa micropeltes- also known as the "red" snakehead in the pet trade when they were legal to sell

Channa argus- more common one to be found

                          Hope this helps!

Thanks Capt! I think this is a great offer. I want to do the winning so I don't think I am the best person to do the judging.

What are you thinking for the start and finish dates for the contest? Should there be some kind of marker in the photo with the fish for submission (assuming that a posted photo of the bugger is okay for entry)?

Now that is awesome. Thanks Captain! I will kick in a third place prize, brand new large/xl life jacket we won at the Susquehanna Flats Jamboree. What do you think, best snakehead fight on video? Best dispatching method for the snakehead? Ridiculous lure catch (anyone remember the Woody lure from TKAA?)?

Someone else can judge though. I nominate JFFoley since he is our tournament director and a fair and impartial judge.

Captain, another question, from your posts about the dog cave basement Memory Maker is working on, you sound pretty handy. Think you can turn out a club/priest as part of the prize? Some of us city dwellers have giving up tool space for more fishing space and do not have the requisite equipment to really do it justice.
                              Used to fish more.
