I'm excited to get out for the first time this year and plan on going down to Chincoteague next weekend and head to Four Mouths for flounder. I haven't done it before, and was hoping for some advice on the best place to launch, and any other information that may be helpful. Thanks! Troy

Flounder Fishing at Chincoteague

Not sure about the four mouths, but there is a launch ramp at Capt Bob's at the end of the Island off Main St.. Also, there is a nice ramp at Veteran's Memorial Park and good fishing from there up to and beyond the Beach Access Rd. bridge. Tom's Cove is another spot you might want to try also, you can launch right there by the beach.
Goodluck..

Queen Sound has lots of cuts and channels that can be productive on the outgoing tides- a good depth sounder is essential for finding the subtle changes that hold the keeper flounder.
The Inlet also holds flounder along the edges of the channel- drifting a big minnow dressed buck tail is one way to catch doormats- big strip baits, dragged along the bottom can be the ticket for a citation on the wall. Problem with fishing the inlet is boat traffic and the big wakes from the fast movers."Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS

Thanks for the help guys. Nice fish on that bucktail.
Has anyone made that trip before? What's the paddle like from Chincoteague to The Four Mouths?
I was looking at either putting in at Merritt Harbor (south end of Main St) or at the Landing on the West side of the causeway going onto Chincoteague. Both are Town of Chincoteague landings, and I see you need a permit, however it says online you have to have the trailer registration in hand to get a permit. So, do I need a permit if I have no trailer?
If I put in on the west side, I was thinking of launching in Cockle Creek, if boat traffic is an issue in the bigger water of Shelly Bay and the inlet.
Thanks again.

How is the current in the inlet. Is it possible to yak through the inlet and into the shoals? On the map it seems like a small inlet leading to and from a large bay. Similar to OC and the water rolls through there.___________________________

HOw do we keep up with the current? I was there last weekend and the grass was getting caught up on my line. The fish finder wouldn't stop beeping, but I think it was mostly all the floating grass in the water. With the current being so fast how do you guys manage to work the drop offs? I fished veterans memorial park with 1 oz spro bucktail and gulp swimming mullets. No luck. Just a lot of a grass and current was taking me REALLY fast. (not sure if it was more the wind or the current).
Any tips on how to fish chincoteague? The best time spent is time that doesn't feel like it was spent at all. When it's worth it you'll give everything to do it all over again no matter what the cost.

DSon I had the same problems in OC inlet last summer, it wasd either tide or wind that was pushing me fast (mostly wind)
I'm going tp get a drift sock here pretty soon (graduation money ). Basically a drift sock is a large bag that is attached to the boat and catches in the water. The drag provided by the sock slows down your drift considerably. Some of the socks I looked at had mouths that you could adjust the size of the opening, thus adjusting the amount of drag, and your speed....You could also go old school and through a 5 gallon bucket overboard.-Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160

I have a drift sock. I've never used it before though. I'll try it out. Maybe this weekend. The best time spent is time that doesn't feel like it was spent at all. When it's worth it you'll give everything to do it all over again no matter what the cost.

I think a drag chain might be a better option, drift socks can be a pain! Just my .02'12 Ocean Kayak Prowler trident 13 Orange
