  • Buy More Bait!

The best parts of the fishing are composed of three things, to me. The three components are equally important:

    • Planning
    • Executing the plan (actually fishing)
    • Catching the fish according to the plan

But recently, I haven’t had luck on the third component – “Catching fish according to the plan”

For example, I tried catch one walleye six times this year so far, and no walleye in my record book yet. I fish 2-3 times a week if I include 2 hour fishing.

I went Tog fishing 3 times and only one keeper out of 15. And one day I was skunked.

Last Saturday after tog-fishing, I mentioned to my wife that I have been doing pretty bad on the third component – “Catching fish according to the plan”

On the following Sunday, I mumbled that “Dang! Eating the leftover bait (shrimp and blue crab) became the funest part of the fishing to me”

She turned around and told me “Buy more bait!”

Haha... well, togs are a finicky fish. They only want fresh crabs and shrimp, just like us... If you were fishing for catfish, you might not wanna eat that stuff. "MMmmm, honey, worms, chicken livers and cut bunker for dinner!"

I'm sure you'll get on some fish really soon.

LMAO ....... but your wife is right .........

the bait usually tastes better than the fish ......... Crabs, clams, shrinp ........ haven't tried menhaden but pickled herring and sour cream is GREAT........

Hahaha Joe this is great. It was always a chore trying to explain to my dad why one would buy shrimp at $9/lb to catch a fish worth $6/lb (Tog not included here!). It's well worth it in my opinion!
BTW where did you go to try for walleye? I accidently caught one and long distanced released it at Chain Bridge one year and a buddy of mine caught one at Leesylvania State Park of all places. The one I lost was heartbreaking. I still have no idea how to actually target them.

Haha, that's pretty good. At least your wife has a sense of humor. Since I mostly use lures, I'd just be eating lead and plastic.

Sorry to hear about your missed targets, though. I know how you feel. My shad mojo was way off this year, and it seems like I've had more slow trips than usual thus far. I also hope the striper topwater bite is better than it was last year.

Have you been trying for walleye at the Occoquan? Ryan (shadyfisher) and Justin (camelbird) caught a nice one each on the Potomac on Saturday during our Fletcher's M&G. If getting there wasn't such a hassle for me, I would like to try and target them there. From what little I know about walleye, that seems like a premo spot for them.
