  • What's your strangest catch?

Looking through old kayak fishing pictures I came across this one of a Lizzard Fish I caught at Point Lookout a few years ago. It hit a flounder rig with a strip of squid on it.

What is the strangest fish you have caught kayak or otherwise?

Wow, kind of reminds me of the alien creature in the "Alien" movie.

Nothing too weird. I caught a blue crab on a Gulp grub. I also caught a white cat on a BKD.

Actually, one was kind of funny--I had juvenile heron pic my bobber out of the water and fly off with it when I was a kid. I was talking to my father and not paying attention, so I felt the tug, set the hook, and looked up in time to see the heron spinning sideways and hit the water with my bobber in still in its mouth. Everyone involved was pretty confused. What was really funny was the heron went and did it a second time.

I snagged a huge clam on my swim shad at HRBT, it was the size of my hand:

Not kayak fishing, but my wife accidentally caught a bullfrog on a popper in a farm pond:

The strangest I've seen was Joe (Comeonfish) catch a snake (not a snakehead) on topwater at Mattawoman.

My strangest catches are a maxi-pad on the outgoing tide at the tidal basin and a school of redfish just above the 301 bridge.

Not strange, but I've caught numerous stickfish, logfish, bagfish, deformed fish, but the best was a seagull while casting to breaking blues. The punk bit me too.

Best was a guy fishing at PLO crossed my line, when I reeled in his line, he had a standard top and bottom ring with bait on one hook and a crankbait on the other.

Jim, that looks like a lizard fish. I caught a few in Nagshead.

I've caught an anchor line with anchor attached, clam shells, rocks etc but the strangest was probably a dead bullhead The thing wasn't much more than a skeleton but I had it hooked right in the mouth!

I bet he was in the throat of a larger fish and you hooked it when the bigger fish hit your bait/lure.
