Susquehanna Flats Articles and Videos

Here are a few good articles on the flats. Note: the first article refers to the flats as the lower part of the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Port Deposit. Stating the largest stripers are taken just before the islands above Lapidum and Port Deposit boat ramps. The videos links at the bottom of this post are early April 2011 stripers taken between Port Deposit and Lapidum. Please add any striped bass articles and videos that could help us yakers land more big ones.

Thanks Yak Fish. I am going to have to check this launch site out. Looks like a great location to get out on the southern part of the flats. I am on my motorcycle today and may stop by there on the way home from work.

Yak Fish, Since I am 2 hours away. could you provide some assistance?

Do you park on the edge of the field across from the house? If the launch where I show the pin and cart down? I do not see any other trail as they talked about on the website.

Rob - I heard a rumor that cars can only go as far as the green field shown on the map. You must then carry in from there. Also heard the dirt road leading to the waters edge is OK for kayak carts. The dirt road to the water's edge is just barely visible on the topo map you have attached. Only rumor though.

The hardest part is actually finding the place. You'll drive towards Father Martin's Ashley which is a rehab center. It looks like a private drive. You'll make a right just before the Ashley and it will lead to those houses. I park just on the left hand side of the road. There are signs up by the residents, No Trespassing.

The paved section stops and you'll have to cart from there. There is a sign for no motor vehicles. Also it is not wise because you'll likely get your car stuck if you go further. Cart along the field which will lead you right to the trail, which will lead you to where you have the pin prick. The trail is difficult to see on the map, but you can somewhat make it out. It is a steep, but not terribly so, grade to the water.

If you have access to APG you can launch from there much easier. I use the APG launch area when fishing Swan Creek (see attachement).

South End Boat Launch

Yak FIsh, This is a very nice place and should not remind anyone of Deliverance. I have not launched here, but the directions provided by the link allow you to drop yak off near beach area. Then park back up at the Maryland Agricultural Foundation Building. Only negative is the walk to and from the beach launch site:

If you are active duty or retired military there is a marina/launch ramp at APG as well. Not sure of the regulations for it, since I don't qualify to use it

Swan Harbor is a very nice place, except that I was there about a month ago with a sign saying no fishing until further notice. The pier was all roped off so we can't launch there at the moment unless something has changed very recently. The walk is also VERY long and downhill. So before you go, double check that it's open.
