Action Item! Spriggs Farm Park Design Public Meeting 6 pm Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Broadneck Library

Why is going to this meeting important? Spriggs Farm Park is the only public water access site on the south shore of the Magothy River. The current stopgap access pass is almost unusable. Two prior designs for Spriggs effectively eliminated public water access in the park. We pushed back and Rec & Parks did a re-design. This meeting is our only chance to review the revised design and make sure that it protects and improves public water access. Fishing yaks are the heaviest paddlecraft. The access path design from the parking lot is critical. Most of the attendees at these meetings are people who live near a park and who often oppose public water access in the park. Remember Halloween 2015 just after Spriggs Farm Park opened? A private lock was placed on the park gate and a car with a sign on it saying the park was closed to the public was parked in the middle of the road to block access to Spriggs.

Meeting details: The meeting is at 6 pm on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Broadneck Library Community Meeting Room at 1275 Green Holly Drive, Annapolis, MD 21409. The library is off College Parkway in Cape St. Claire. Unfortunately, the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks is no longer offering virtual attendance. We have to go to the library for an in-person presentation.

And finding information on this meeting was a shell game.I found out about if from a brief notice in a constituent services email from the county executive's office. It referenced a Rec & Parks notice. The Rec & Parks notice did not give much info. You have to know to go look at the Department of Public Works (DPW) website for the meeting notice. You have to know to go look at the Office of Planning and Zoning (OPZ) website for the park design plan. If you don't know to go look at three separate department websites AND how to find info on each of those department websites (OPZ is a maze) you are not going to find out about this meeting and know how important it is.

      Hello all,

I am putting together a Spriggs Water Access Team. Would a fishing kayaker please volunteer to join the team and participate in the 6 pm Wed July 12 2023 in-person public meeting? A county resident would be best, but not required.

A fishing kayaker is the best person to tell the county what fishing yaks want and need at Spriggs. Additionally, the county doesn't believe a user group exists and/or counts unless the user group shows up in person.

If you haven't been to Spriggs here's the park website: https://www.aacounty.org/locations-a...on-the-magothy

You need the gate code to get into the park and right now the water access is a hot mess.

Lisa-thanks for all the work you do. I won't be able to get up that way in time, due to work commitments. However, I let some friends know and will try to spread the word.
