  • Welp...there goes the trout fishery

With the severe cold we had in January I was worried there would be huge cold stun events further south where the trout winter over. Unfortunately, it appears to be underway. There are thousands of big spawners all over the Elizabeth River and Lynnhaven watershed that didn't make it. Maryland and Virginia really need to lower the bag limit this year...and Maryland ought to bump up the limit on drum.

I know, they will bounce back. And we were due for a rough winter after years of unusual warmth. But it still sucks.

I saw some of the photos of the fish dying on Facebook and it looks really rough. I still haven't been able to make it down to VA beach yet and it's a shame. Hopefully they can come back even stronger.

It's such a shame because after several years with no significant kills there were a lot of big trout in the bay last year. I was catching them right up until the day before the first big freeze in January. Now 95% of them are dead.

Just wanted to update this thread. Reports of specs being caught over in the Choptank. I've personally seen trout being caught in the Bay/lower Potomac this weekend and last. I lost a +20" one a t the boat today. My buddy got a citation 26", plus a smaller (13.5") one. We also picked up some slot and under rockfish and a few white perch. Lots of CNR out there though.

Thanks for the update! Glad that there seems to be a lot of big ones left to keep the population healthy

I'm having the same problem. Just tried to post a report and it gave me the same error message. Plus the main forum is flooded with spam from last month.

Hope the kinks are works out. I've really appreciated this forum over the years. Lots of folks may have migrated to social media, but it's not the same and actual reports are sporadic now over there too. BIL went out yesterday-skunked. I went out this morning at sunrise, high tide at 9ish. Nothing but under slot rock. Lost several plastics to blues. Missed a probable spec. Lower Potomac

I can't start a new thread. Wanted to put up a report on the Maryland forum twice in a row now but keep getting an error message. Kind of feels like this site has been abandoned.

Anyway, got nine stripers (mostly small) but no drum or trout. Got a trout a few weeks ago. Cownose are starting to get really bad, jellies are showing up in force in the slower lower.

Guess I'll just keep posting here. Slow day at PLO. Caught a big blue out at the bar minutes after two cobia swam past me in about 5' of water, but dummy me didn't have a rod rigged for them at the ready. Also saw a loggerhead out at the channel marker.

I'm getting the same error. I went to Piney Point a couple weeks ago and got a small striper and my buddy got a small speck.

In the back bay I saw a bunch of blow ups but couldn't hook up on anything besides a few croaker, but it looked like there were some small puppy drum jumping.

Grass is starting to get bad in some spaces and there were cow nose ray everywhere. Sad to see that the site is being abandoned.

I also can't start a new topic. Glad to find people in this thread. Some good news. Spriggs Farm Park on the Magothy River in Anne Arundel County reopened after renovation. It now has a wide paved gently sloped path to the water, although you still need a cart and a code for the gate lock.

The last several trips to the St. Mary's River were uneventful but this Friday paid off with a couple of nice trout and a 22" striper. I also trolled right into the middle of 20-30 fish in about 2" of water and spooked them before I could cast to them. Couldn't what they were but I've never seen trout school that tightly so I'm thinking puppy drum or stripers. Also met a guy from here (red Hobie Outback, not sure of his name) that I've seen in years past. Wish this site could be fixed...
