  • Went for an impromtu swim today in the Severn

I have been putting off fishing the last couple of weeks as the wind and temp didn't work out for me.
Today I left out of Jonas Green at about 0830 heading down towards David Taylor.

Right away, things didn't go right. My FF was only indicating 1.7 feet. I set it up with Duct Seal but did not put any water in the well. I really thought that the water was just to get a temperature reading. After getting up to the sailboat races, I decided to take some photos and throw a line. I managed several small hits, like small WP but did not lock on to any.

I was bugged by the FF not working so I paddled into the round cutout next to DT. I figured it was out of the wind and I would open up the Mod Pod and fill the transducer well with water. Since the wind was blowing me into the rocks, I paddled into the middle to give me more time.

I had opened the pod and was leaning into it when I assume I was hit with a wake from behind. Next thing you know, I'm in the water. I tried to self rescue but a combination my PVD catching and not being able to kick my left leg (I had my brace on) only succeeded in rolling the boat.

I tried righting it but all that succeeded in doing was making water enter the hull. After 15 minutes of trying to flag down some help ( there were plenty of boats around), I decided to swim for shore. After checking Google, I found it was a 150 yard swim with a PFD and trying to take the boat with me. Well that didn't work out too well.

I decided to swim for it and doing a half ass back stroke with one leg kicks managed to make shore. Eventually the yak floated in close enough for me to swim out and get it. After I bailed it out with a sponge ( I decided not to keep a bailer cause "who would need a bailer in a SIT yak?)

BTW, since I didn't bungee my two rods and my anchor was secured in its bag but not to the yak, they all rest on the bottom of Davy Jone's place.

I'm going to continue this as a lesson learned item in a separate post. Maybe it will help someone someday.

    Regards,

    John

Wow! Sorry to hear about your ordeal. It's amazing how quickly things can turn. Glad you were wearing your vest!
This is my first season kayak fishing and so far I have kept to small ponds and calm reservoirs. I am just now getting comfortable turning around to reach things in my crate.

I don't use a crate as I can't turn around too easily. I just have the rods in the rocket launcher and can reach them easy enough without turning too much. I do intend to use the back well for keeping my paddle float in from now on though.

I have an aversion to swimming while fishing- I have done that before in a powerboat offshore- not a pleasant experience- In a kayak keep your head in the centerline of the yak and your body will stay inside the yak-don't lean- I never reach behind me- I sit side saddle in the yak to get things out of the tankwell- and I slide my body forward- I have the 33 inch wide Outback and there are those who claim to be able to stand in this boat- even so, I treat the Outback like any other kayak and don't tempt fate- Everyone says there are those who have turtled and those who will turtle- I haven't yet- but I am not so silly to say I won't.

The head centered thing is a must! I have only been at it for a month but can now reach behind me pretty well. I don't care if I throw the same lure all morning but I need to get to my coffee. One thing that helped was to clear everything that was at my feet. Now that all my "stuff" is behind me I can position myself better to turn around. I do need to be careful as I'm not too flexible.

Wow! Sucks about losing some gear, but atleast you made it out ok.

The biggest thing about kayaking and kayak fishing is that you always need to be aware of your surroundings. You never know when a rogue boat wave can come up, especially in the Severn.

Speaking of rogue waves, I was on Rocky Gorge this morning and some guy flew by me in a 14' Jon boat with some insane motor on it. This guy was flying and it was noisy as all get out. It looked to be in the front of the boat. He put off a wake that reached both sides of the reservoir and I had to turn my bow into it just to be safe.
This thing wasn't just some golf cart motor. I think he may have built it out of crashed UFO parts or something.

WOW Glad you are OK. It seams like every year Someone goes over. Practicing recovery is nice as long as everything else in the Recover Process works to plan!!! Glad you are home safe and have your Yak. I agree with the "never turn around "statement and keeping your head and body centerline. I have to learn to do the side saddle thing and be a little more organized, so I don't turtle. That has always been a fear that I must find a way to overcome. Then I can Truly enjoy this sport. That is the reason I don't go out in any type of rough water... The fear of going over.... Again, Glad you're ok and still with us!!! The gear can be replaced!!!

                      John -

I'm sorry to hear that you had an accident today. I hope that does not keep you from pursuing kayak fishing beyond today. I'm sure the turnover was unpleasant, but other than frustration and lost gear it does not sound you were in serious danger.

Hang in there and get back out there again soon. You got some excellent suggestions about balance from the previous posts. The more time you spend on a kayak under different conditions, the more comfortable you will become.

                      Best wishes.

I am fine and will continue yak fishing. Just so you know, white water rafting and yaking are much more taxing and, depending on the level of river, you always wind up in the water sometime.

I was a little too complacent today,( probably due to old brain cells) but I do learn from my mistakes.

As for the tackle, it was God's way of saying I need to buy some new stuff.
