  • Where should I go to catch some founder?

    (flounder, not founder)

I promised someone I'd catch her some flounder this weekend, so I've got to deliver.

Any advice on where to go? I don't mind driving as far as 4 hours from DC. Willing to stay overnight.

    Thx.

Places I've fished for flounder: OC, Lewes (DE), Lynnhaven, Rudee Inlet, HRBT, Back River, CBBT and PLO. There are many more places that I haven't fished. Question is, "Where's the best place now?"

I've heard reports on catches from OC, Rudee and HRBT. Many shorties and a few keepers are caught. Many catches are away from shore.

I've been a couiple of time to Lewes, DE in the bay next to the Ferry landing during this time of year and the bite is always good enough to guarantee catching flounder. Only draw back is that the size is consitantly around 15" which is just under keeping size for DE.

Just go onto the docks with a speck rig and some Gulp mullets and do a very slow retrieve. Or a 1/4 oz jig head and Gulp mullets works well too (Charteuse or white). Since most of the docks out there are private, the yak is beneficial, so you can hit the private docks without trespassing. I think Chincoteague is good this time of year also, but I've never fished out there this time of year.

                Oyster? Where's that? At OC/Delaware?

I hope they're moving toward the bay.

Did you say FONDER within 4 hour driving distance?

Decades ago, I used to go to Wachapreague, VA in the mid April- Mid May with my two boys. Catching flounder was guaranteed in the place near by. The place I got rental skiffs has been gone. The place was called East-West rentals or East-West*.*

All you need is a buoy marker once you caught one in that place. And expect that you share the spot with 20 other anglers.

Or, you may wait until some of us find the spot in DE sooooon.

Oyster is 10 miles north of the CBBT on the Va Eastern shore .......... supposed to have better fishing than Wachepregue or Chincoteague ...... the NC guys flock there but not many from here ........... gotta have a good GPS because it is alot of Marsh cuts and tides of 4 ft .......... nursery for big shrks ........ its also where they launch to get the tarpon ........ supposed to be good for flounder in the summer too ........ NC guys flock there to litterally load up with croaker ...... about 3 miles from Cherrystone .....

H Mart has plenty of flounder try the pier at CHSP, launch to the left and fish the pilings around the end then hit the private pier toward the ferry dock. if it wernt a holiday week end thats where i would be.

So, where are you going this weekend, Chex? Lotte?

Seriously, I'm trying to see if I can go flounder hunting this weekend. We'll see.

I'm not sure yet... Lotte & Hmart are definitely top contenders.

There is what appears to be a launch here, in Queen Sound, Chincoteague: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&q=37...ed%20States%29

I'm liking the looks of it... bridge pilings, steep channel dropoffs... I'm just not sure that's a public launch.

Looking into oyster and Wachapreague next. Sound intriguing too.
