  • Weems on Wednesday

The weather should be decent tomorrow morning, but the winds will be strong from the NW (directly down the Severn). I plan to launch in Weems Creek after breakfast tomorrow. If the winds allow, I may head out in the main river and visit one or more of the creeks upstream on the same side as Weems.

If anyone wants to join me, let me know or just show up.

P.S. In case you did not see a recent report on Tidalfish, a guy fished on Sat from a canoe and caught 5 species. Here is what he posted:

"Me and a friend fished a few creeks and the river front on the mid severn from the canoe Saturday morning......about 50 WP to 12", 1 pickeral to 16", 1 6" croaker, 2 8" flounder and 2 pumpkin seeds. Not sure if that counts as a "grand slam" but it was fun. 1/16oz jigs with small plastics and 1/8 oz bent arm roostertail spinners. The flounder were a neat surprise......I kept gettign these little telltale tap, tap , taps while I was bumping the little jig around some shallow pillings, finally caught one.....might be a few bigger ones around?"

The reported flounder catch surprised me. I have not spent enough time jigging pier pilings. Most of my fishing is casting or trolling light lures up in the water column.

I launched from the Tucker St ramp at 7:30 to a brisk NW wind. I paddled out to the main river and worked my way upstream to a tributary I had not fished since last winter. Once inside the semi-sheltered mouth I began casting small spinner lures to the shoreline. The bite was very good today. Over the next 2 hours, I caught at least 25 white perch (most were 9"-10"), 2 pickerel, and one suprise -- a 7" yellow perch. As I headed back to Weems and then through the outer half of Weems, I trolled four lines and picked up about 10 small stripers. At one point, 3 of the 4 lines got hit at the same time. Had the fish been larger, it could have been a mess. However, with 6" fish, there is little pull-back.

While trolling back to Weems, I put a 3/8-oz jighead and a 4" Gulp minnow on one line. I had two tails bitten off during 20 minutes of trolling. That suggests to me that there may be some blues in the area too.

The wind was strong on the open part of the river. In the tributary, which had tall, steep sides, the NW wind got redirected and swirled from all directions at different times. Nevertheless, it was one of my more productive outings. I really do enjoy living 4.5 miles from a good launch spot. I can leave home and be underway on the water in less than 30 minutes.
