  • Fishing out of Weems on July 4

I plan to have a leisurely breakfast on July 4 then head to the Tucker St launch on Weems Creek (estimated launch time 8:00 - 8:30). Assuming the river is not too windy, I want to paddle upstream to fish Martin's Pond and possibly the Cove of Cork (where I did very well two weeks ago). If anybody wants to join me, send a pmail with your cell phone number -- I will check in the morning before leaving. I plan to be back to the ramp before noon.

Good luck! Im heading to Truxton Park tomorrow at first light to scout it out for taking my dad crabbing there with his boat on saturday. But if things dont look good at Truxton, I might end up at Tucker St ramp...

My exploratory trip yielded a nice Severn bounty: 18 nice crabs and 8 10" perch. Severn almost never lets me down. Hope you had as much if not more luck than I did John!

Another bonus of the trip was hearing the plebes yelling U-S-A, U-S-A for their morning drills. God Bless America!

        Ryan -

I'm glad your trip was productive and food-worthy. I was able to follow the plan I outlined last night. I visited Martins Pond for the first time this summer. I found one shallow pocket of perch there -- about 12 fish in 20 casts, then picked up a few more working around the shoreline. I also caught perch in Cove of Cork and in Weems. I picked up two Arkansas capitol fish (little rock) at the mouth of Weems. I also saw a couple of baby needlefish (5" long and skinnier than a pencil).

I met MKF members WST120 and FishPhoto at the ramp as I was launching. They decided to fish in Weems. I saw them again when I returned. They did pretty well too -- each guy got a pickerel plus other species. They had some photos -- I hope they will post them later.

I also caught a 5" Striper and many baby croakers. Here a few pics:

              John,

Roy and I both enjoyed talking to you this morning and thanks to one of your tips, Roy caught a nice pickerel. I caught about a dozen fish (my first pickerel, one Bluegill, several 7 and 12 inch rock , and a bunch of white perch, several which were 10 inches). Weems never disappoints. Roy was the big winner with the pickerel. I felt bad when the line broke while I was trying to grab the fish with my lip grippers. But we did get pictures!

Hope to see you again soon.

That is an excellent pickerel for any time of year. To catch one that large in the summer is a great accomplishment.
