NorCal Kayaker attacked by shark

I have never been attacked by a shark, but can relate a more pleasant kayak encounter with shark. A few years ago, I attended a conference in San Diego. On the last day we ended early so three of us took a taxi to La Jolla to rent kayaks. We were guided by a guy from the rental company. We launched through modest surf, then paddled to see large sea lions on the rocks and look at the sea caves. On the way back, the guide took us over an area not far from shore that was a nursery ground for some type of sharks (I think they were leopard sharks). We could look down through the clear water and see dozens of 2-3 ft sharks swimming about.
I suspect that kayakers in colder climates have occasional run-ins with seals, sea lions, orcas, or other whales. Whether aggressive or passive, there is some concern about having large powerful sea creatures too near a kayak.John Veil

Just in case you younger yakfishers don't know about it, when the the salt content is high, we get Bull sharks in the bay.
A few years ago, one swam by my boat off bloody point as I was drifting. I thought the fin was from a ray until I drifted by him. He looked to be about 4 or 5 feet long. BTW, the salt content is up this year.

A few years ago, a guy in a yellow Prowler got attacked by a big shark, but I can't remember the species. He somehow righted the yak and got back. I don't think I'd have a yellow yak on the West Coast, and I would consider painting tiger shark stripes on the underside.Yellow Hobie Revo Rube Goldberg

the people that test shark repelent call it yum-yum yellow because it attracts sharks the best. i just picked up an insulated bag to keep fish in, thinking about keeping them on a stringer next to the yak was making me nervous expecially in DE bay there are some big sharks around there.ive had dolphin come up about 10' away and take a breath that kinda startled me and it was longer the my revo cool but its still a wild animal and it had its family with it

Surfdog,
In my much younger days, I would fly over the Delaware Bay and see hammerheads longer than my boat basking in the sun. I used to swim and sail the Delaware Bay for many years before I learned that it was one of the largest breeding grounds for sharks. From then on, I stopped swimming from the boat in mid bay.
Again many years ago, like early '60's, we used to have Portuguese Man O War's swimming around in the bay. One day as I was dangling my legs over my sunfish, I felt something brush against me. When I looked, I about fell out of the boat trying to get away. I was lucky in that only the top envelop brushed against me and I did not contact any of the tentacles.
Both bays have given me much enjoyment along with a few anxious moments.

yeah ive never seen a hammer but there are some big ones there from bulls to threshers and duskies. i think the DE bay shark tournament is either pretty soon or is already done. i was drifting for flounder in the broadkill with a buddy when he snagged a huge cow nose off the bottom and it had a 14" bite taken out of it very clean very big bite:O

A few weeks ago I was jigging for flounder at Roosevelt Inlet, DE. As I pulled up the curly tail lure along side the yak, a shark (maybe 5-6 ft) followed the lure to about a foot away and then suddenly turned away. Don't know what kind of shark it was, but it sure startled me.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)
