  • tip for you new guys

Check the weather everytime. Got caught out at the bay bridge today. It was fun. Usna reported 35mph thomas point reported 30mph and patapsco bouy reported 51mph... pictures to follow of the 1-2 footers INSIDE of hemmingways marina.

Since you had the wherewithall to make this post, I assume you got back to shore safely. That was a violent line of storms. Thanks for the reminder about checking the weather.

Wow, I heard that they closed the bridge due to the high winds and I was thinking I hope no one tried to go out today...

Yikes! That looks hairy. A weather radio helps, too. The one I have has an alarm signal when NWS has a warning. It's given me a head start a couple times.

Glad you got out of that one alright. Good advice about the weather radio. My VHF does that sort of thing. I guess I will have to make sure I take the radio every trip.

I'm not sure if it still sounds the alarm when the volume is turned way down. I'll have to check.

Only got caught out once- but that was enough for me- tough five miles getting in- it was just wind- no storm- dead calm then a stiff 25-35 mph gust of wind blew in that never slowed down-

that radio bit is a great deal of help. I had mine on when it was a nice calm day back in April and it started beeping LOUDLY. I was like WTF as we were jigging at the bridge and trying to stay quiet. I was a thunderstorm warning, but it was for Shepardstown WV area, so it is helpful and probably would have let Pinch know for this storm, but sometimes it can be a false warning as well. Better to know of something then to not though!

I like the action photos Pinch! The storm missed my home, but there was a ton of lightning as I was leaving work.

I think most of the big brands are solid (Icom, Standard Horizons, etc), but I would pick one that floats and that has a "burp" function for clearing water out of the speaker. Mine doesn't have that function, which makes it almost impossible to hear if water gets in the speaker, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a waterproof, floating radio.

I have this one http://www.basspro.com/Standard-Hori...10210160/93423 and like it a lot. I have not gotten it wet yet, so I don't know if what ictalurus is saying will happen if it does or not. I really liked that it was rechargeable, which I guess most are, but the battery last a long time if you are just listening on it. Don't know the drainage of it if you were transmitting.
