I am looking for suggestions for a low(er) cost Baitcasting Reel. I have one Abu Garcia Revo SX. I love this reel but it cost about $130. With a rod, the package is going to be over $200. I would like to get 2 or 3 new rods to gradually start replacing my low dollar, low quality spinning gear. I would like to save a few pesos, but I don't want to buy junk. Is this an impossible dream? HELP!!

Russ the Garcia revo S are an awesome reel as well for 99. Good in the salt, great drag at 17lbs.
I have a few of the pro qualifiers from BPS, they have 10lb drag. Mine are holding up great in the salt and cast good, not as good as your SX though ha.
Lews also makes a quality bait caster for 99 i believe, sometimes on sale at 79.
A newer company, havent heard much of them but a buddy has one . is 49$ called H20 supposed to be salt water rated with 10 bearings

Have you/anyone had any experience with anything from Quantum?

Short answer is yes- I believe it is an impossible dream- When you go out and get a under $100 baitcasting reel in the waters and conditions we fish- you can't expect it to perform up to the standards of slightly higher priced reels.... it is a fact- you get what you pay for- I bought a Abu Revo SX for $110.00 (free shipping) recently- (My second Revo SX) I think the Revo SX is the sweet spot in low profile casting reels- affordable, quality, user-friendly, all-around performer- Does a reel with less "bells and whistles" than the SX fill your needs? That depends on what you want-"Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS

Yes, I've used Quantums. I have three Quantum baitcasters: Tournament Addition TE, Cabo and Catalyst. I also own Daiwa Luna 203, Shimano Calcutta 200B, AG Revo SX HS, AG Orra Inshore, and Shimano Curado 200E7 baitcasters. The most impressive is the Addition TE (ball bearing, lightweight, ACS, carbon fiber handle, etc.). All are good reels. All cast well with the proper adjustments. I wash my reels with soap/water after every outing.
My go-to reel is the Catalyst, bought for $80 over two years ago. It's a freshwater BC that I've used often on saltwater (Bay and Ocean). No issues or problems. Works great. For the price, I have no problem buying another one.Last edited by tufnik; 08-14-2012, 07:00 PM.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

I've used the Quantum Accurist (~$99) for several years now and have had no problems with it. I can actually cast it better than my Revo SX-HS. The external centrifugal cast control (ACS II) knocks off too much distance even on the lowest setting. It's probably not bad for bass fishing, but I like long casts when saltwater fishing. I just turn off the cast control and haven't had much problems with birds nests. I like the flipping switch for jigging for flounder and stripers.
I recently picked up a Bass Pro Extreme baitcaster on clearance: http://basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Ex...t/103926/92385
I got the one with the flipping switch. I've only had it a few months, so I can't attest to its durability, but casting it is easy. I haven't had a backlash yet (knock on wood). I've caught some nice bass with it, but I haven't caught any stripers or snakeheads to really test the drag.Yellow Hobie Revo Rube Goldberg

Quantum Catalyst can be had on Ebay for about $30-45 new. I have one that I've been using for the past two years and it's pretty decent. Casts well and drag has held up fine for rockfish and snakeheads. It doesn't have all the features my revo inshore or curado 201e7 does but it's definitely a good buy and will suit your purpose.Used to fish more.
